Physical Geography Topic Paper(s) The purpose of the research paper is to more thoroughly examine the physical characteristics of a particular natural Climate/Biological event and its effects on the human environment. PAST/PRESENT: Find a location (city, state, country, or region) that has experienced a Biological / Climatological event recently (last decade or so) and in the past (decades or centuries ago). Compare and contrast the events and their effects to people and property (Past and Present) (Pro/Con), Comparison/Contrast, etc… This template provides the minimum criteria to earn a passing grade. OUTLINE/TEMPLATE: Introduction-a brief overview of the topic covered in this research paper General description of timing, location and region/area of phenomenon Impact Statement that includes effect of hazard on people and property (deaths/damage), vulnerability/risks, and mitigations (use of maps, figures, and tables (not required but acceptable)) Conclusion-your thoughts on the findings of your research WRITTEN FORMAT: 12pt font 1.5 spacing 2-5 pages of text (not including graphs, maps, cover sheet) Cover Sheet (three parts: top 1/3- your full name and date, middle- Title of Paper/Course Title and date, bottom 1/3- Instructor name) Work Cited/Bibliography page (Give credit where DUE) Submit online or hard-copy to Professor with paper bound by a staple in upper left corner! Note: This project is a pass/fail grade and is worth 20% towards your total grade. LATE PAPER = FAIL…NO EXCEPTIONS Examples Climate Events to research (you are not limited to the list): Climatological – image.png Biological- Pandemic disease, Crop Disease, Locust, etc. Soils: Desertification, Soil degradation, Clearing of Tropical rainforest

INSTRUCTIONS: Answer all of the following three questions. One or two well-developed paragraphs per question will suffice.
1. Think about a migration flow within your family, whether internal, international, voluntary, or forced. The flow can be one you experienced or one you only heard about through family. List the push and pull factors. Then, hypothesize how the migration flow of your family was tied to larger migration flows at the time. Does your family’s migration flow fit into the global map in Figure 3.6 (in the 12th edition of the textbook)? Was your family’s migration at a different scale – nationally or locally? Determine both the scale of your family’s migration flow and identity how the scale of the flow impacted your family – did they find others like themselves at their destination? How would finding or not finding others like themselves impact the identities of your family members who migrated?
2. Analyze Figure 3.30 (in the 12th edition of the textbook), migration to the United States by region. Choose one region and one time. Research an example of a migration flow to the United States from that region at that time (e.g. east European migration in 1900). Describe where migrants from that region primarily settled in the United States. Explain relocation diffusion. Imagine how the migration flow you chose can be seen in the cultural landscape of the destination region in the United States both at the time of migration and today.
3. The fast fashion industry takes runway looks and turns them into low-cost, disposable clothing immediately available to consumers. The fashion industry accounts for $1.2 trillion globally, and the amount of clothing being produced has doubled since 2005. How has time-space compression enabled fast fashion to knock off a celebrity look and make it available to consumers in 24 hours?

Currently we are in the midst of climate change; specifically a dramatic increase in our surface temperatures. This is resulting in a net decrease of not only of sea ice, but continental ice sheets & mountain glaciers as well. As you’ve learned, sea-level rise is one of the major concerns of this melting ice trend. How much will sea level rise at our current pace? Well, there are a few scenarios based on our future carbon dioxide emissions: anywhere from 1-4ft by 2050, all the way up to worst-case-scenario 4-10ft by 2100.
1. Start by opening the Sea Level Rise Viewer Site and then click the green “Get Started” button (see screenshot below).
When you first access the site, it will look like this:
2. In the search bar at the top, enter “Alameda, CA, USA”. You will see the current sea-level conditions at high water/tide. Use the “Water Level” slider bar on the left to change the water level height (up to 10 ft). As mentioned above, the scenarios of sea level rise vary. It is anticipated that sea level will rise anywhere from 1ft – 4ft by 2050, up to 4ft – 10ft by 2100. Explore what happens to Alameda and surrounding cities/areas as the water level changes (i.e., where does inundation/flooding occur? This is indicated in blue on the map). Take a screenshot or picture of the map of Alameda so I may view it. Next, answer the following prompt:
(A) Based on what you are seeing in the Sea Level Rise Viewer map of Alameda, briefly summarize which areas will be mostly impacted by inundation at various amounts of sea level rise.
3. Next, search for any other coastal city (other than Alameda and the Bay Area) and repeat what you did for Step 2. Note: this GIS has been recently updated and now only has sea level rise data for locations in the United States or a United States territory (such as Guam, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, etc.) – so, if you use this mapping tool, your second location must be within the U.S. or U.S. territories. If you would like to explore elsewhere, Google Earth has a good visual of other, global coastal cities (London, Mumbai, Shanghai, Lagos, and Rio De Janeiro). Please feel free to explore this alternative tool if you are interested in those locations and click on the “Tour Cities” button and . Take a screenshot or picture of the area/city/location you are looking at in your map so I may view it. Next, answer the following prompts:
(B) Based on what you are seeing in the Sea Level Rise Viewer map of the coastal location of your choosing, briefly summarize which areas will be mostly impacted by inundation at various amounts of sea level rise.
(C) Why is it important to make observations and predictions of sea level rise? What are the potential impacts the encroaching ocean will have on our coastal communities?
This is whole detail for this project

The details of the paper are listed in one of the below documents. The research paper guidlines document will tell you the format and the structure for the paper. There is also an annotated bibliography / research proposal that is included that should be referred to to develop the final research essay. Aside from writing the essay, there needs to be four more peer-reviewed references that need to be added. There needs to be a total of 10 references, i have provided 6, so there needs to be four more. Please let me know if anything requires further clarification.
