Week 3 Homework Assignment: Thesis Blueprint for Paper 1
Go to this week’s Learning Resources and make sure that you have carefully read the following:
“Thesis Statements”
“What Is a Thesis Statement?”
“How Do I Create a Thesis?”
“How Do I Know if My Thesis Is Strong?”
“Your Thesis Can Be a Blueprint”
“Brainstorming”
Make sure you understand the assigned readings before drafting your thesis for Paper 1. Remember that thesis building is an iterative process of trial and error, so you probably will need to work through a few different versions of your thesis statement. As you draft and redraft, ask yourself the four questions discussed in Week 3 Insights and the six questions discussed in “How Do I know if My Thesis Is Strong?”
Instructions for Week 3 Homework:
Refer to the Thesis Blueprint homework handout.
Refer to the examples provided in the handout and complete these steps:
Write your thesis statement, paying attention to vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and punctuation. Short story titles are placed within quotation marks in MLA style. Authors are referenced by their full names at first mention, and by last name thereafter.
Paraphrase your claim and three warrants. You do not need to place them into a graphic, but please label and list each one:
Claim =
Warrant 1 =
Warrant 2 =

Paula S- Good afternoon Professor and Class,
For your initial post, respond to the questions below:
Which Key Resources that you identified in the Week 4 Discussion are the most expensive?
The following I feel are they key resources that are the most expense when opening an at home-based animal rescue are:
First is the cost of leasing or buying a piece of property to house and shelter the animals can be one of the most significant expenses when opening animal rescue. 2. The veterinary care provided at an animal rescue can include general checkups, vaccinations, preventative measures, emergency care, and specialized care, and can be a considerable expense. 3. Hiring and training employees to run the animal rescue efficiently can be expensive. Staffing needs can include veterinarians, animal caretakers, administrative staff, and volunteers. 4. The cost of purchasing or leasing equipment like animal transportation vehicles, food, bedding, cleaning supplies, and other operational materials can be a considerable expense. 5. Spreading the word about a new animal rescue comes with advertising, networking, and social media outreach efforts. Building a strong brand and a network of supporters will take an investment in time, energy, and sometimes money. 6. Protection from lawsuits, theft, and injury can come at a high cost insuring the animal care facility, workers, and residents. 7. Qualifications to run and manage animal care facilities require training and certification, which can also come with significant costs.
Looking at your current plan for your business model, which Key Activities are most expensive?
Setting up operations for an at-home animal rescue can be more expensive compared to setting up operations for larger animal shelters because an at-home animal rescue requires significant investment in creating animal-friendly living spaces, access to veterinary care, hiring and training employees or volunteers, providing supplies and equipment, building a network of supporters, and marketing efforts. Additionally, because at-home animal rescues have limited space, they can only house a limited number of animals, which means that they may not be able to rely on adoption fees and donations to cover their expenses as much as larger shelters can. They may also have to invest more in medical care, particularly if they take in sick or injured animals that need specialized care. Moreover, an at-home animal rescue faces specific challenges such as zoning laws, neighbors concerned about noise, traffic, or potential problems caused by having multiple animals in a confined space and maintaining sanitary conditions in a living space. Meeting these challenges can also add to the operating costs. Finally, it is important to note that an at-home animal rescue’s operating costs may vary significantly depending on the size, location, and specific focus of the rescue, as well as its long-term goals. However, despite these challenges, at-home animal rescues play an important role in providing care and shelter for animals and in promoting animal welfare, and many are successful in building sustainable operations and strong donor networks.
What is the one thing you will have to do to brand your product to your target market?
Determine the demographics of the market you want to reach and tailor your branding to meet their needs and preferences.
Iriana M- Hi Professor and class,
In the journey of bringing a new idea to the market, understanding the costs associated with developing and launching a business is paramount (Kawasaki, 2004). This understanding can make or break a startup, as illustrated by the case of Tio, where miscalculations in cost structures had significant repercussions (Tio case study).
Key Resources – The Costly Foundation:
Key resources are the foundational assets required to make a business model work. From the discussions in Week 4, one of the most expensive key resources identified for my business model is specialized technology and equipment. This encompasses any proprietary technology or machinery crucial for product development or service delivery. The costs associated with acquiring or developing such technology can be substantial. This resource is akin to the “Underlying Magic” mentioned by Guy Kawasaki in his book, emphasizing the significance of the technology powering a solution (Kawasaki, 2004). A robust technological foundation is often a prerequisite for competing effectively in the market.
Key Activities – Investing for Success:
Key activities refer to the tasks or milestones that must be accomplished in the process of running a business. In my current business plan, the most expensive key activities are related to product development and marketing. Developing a high-quality product involves various expenses, including research, design, prototyping, and testing. Additionally, marketing activities such as advertising, market research, and promotional campaigns can consume a significant portion of the budget. It aligns with Kawasaki’s advice to “Get Going” and start creating the product or service while being ready to iterate quickly based on customer feedback (Kawasaki, 2004). This iterative approach in product development can be costly but is often necessary to meet market demands effectively.
Branding – The Art of Connection:
Branding plays a pivotal role in shaping a product’s identity and its perception by the target market. To successfully brand a product, especially in today’s competitive landscape, one must create a compelling and memorable brand story. This narrative should convey the product’s unique value proposition and resonate with the emotions and needs of the target audience. Simplicity in messaging, as emphasized by Guy Kawasaki, is crucial here (Kawasaki, 2004). A compelling brand story establishes an emotional connection with customers, fostering loyalty and differentiation in a crowded marketplace.
Understanding the cost structures of key resources and activities is fundamental to a successful business launch. Allocating resources wisely to specialized technology, product development, and strategic marketing can make the difference between success and failure. Simultaneously, crafting a compelling brand story that resonates with the target market is essential for creating a lasting and impactful presence in the business world.

Keywords and Annotation: Close Reading of a Short Story
The first time you read the short stories for this class, you will be doing what is considered passive reading—reading the story with an open mind. Perhaps you will flag things that stood out to you, or that raised questions. You may jot down unfamiliar words to look up later. Mainly, though, you read to locate main ideas that help you follow the story.
One way a reader stays connected to the main idea of the story is through keywords. Authors will purposefully use and repeat keywords throughout their writing to emphasize an important idea or concept. Repetition of a keyword may also occur through use of synonyms, such as using “sightless” or “loss of vision” as synonymous with “blind.”
Annotating keywords can help us understand the literary elements of a short story, such as plot, character, setting, diction, or theme. You were introduced to these literary terms in Week 1.
For this homework assignment, you will reread and annotate the story you chose for Week 2, Discussion 1. You will locate keywords that signal the literary elements of the short story. You should read closely and carefully, noting words or synonyms that repeatedly draw your attention to the literary elements of theme, plot, character, and setting. In a printed book, you may underline or highlight them. You may also write notes to yourself in the margins. In a PDF, you may be using the markup tools or comment features.
There is no exact, “right way” of annotating a particular story; like the writing process, the close reading process is yours to individualize. If you prefer to print out the story on paper, annotate it by hand, and then upload a picture or scan of the paper, that submission would be perfectly fine as well.
In short, by reading the story more than once and annotating it, you are engaging in active reading, which will improve your experience as a reader. You will comprehend more, remember more, react more, and possibly visualize more. The reason to annotate is to become an active reader.
Directions:
1. Identify three of the following literary elements in the story, and explain how you recognize them:
• plot
• character
• setting
• theme
2. Choose just one of the literary elements that you discussed in Question 1 and list 10 keywords in the story that relate to that element.
3. Annotate at least one section of the story that elucidates the literary element.
4. Take a screenshot (or a picture, if you’re using a print version) of your annotated section(s) of the story. Save it as a PDF or JPG, and upload it to the Assignments area of the classroom.

Submit a rough draft for your research paper. Use the research paper rubric and biography outlines under Learning Materials to focus your efforts.
You are working on a rough draft for this module. Here is what to do.
1. Look at the Biography Outline template directly underneath Assignments.
2. Download the template and answer the questions. Then submit this outline to me as your rough draft. It will serve as a way to gather your ideas and quotations as preparation for the final copy of the essay.
3. The outline is your rough draft. You can add a thesis statement if you like. You may submit a regular rough draft if you wish, but I prefer the outline.
4. Remember that in the final paper you must use quotations from at least two of the SOURCES you researched. This is not the same as two quotes from one source. You many use as many quotes as you need. This is, after all, a research paper. NOTE: The quotations do not have to be what the author himself has said. The quotations can be what has been said about the author by someone else, i.e. your research sources. You may use more than two sources if you wish. You may even add sources. If you add sources, be sure to put them on your Works Cited page which will be submitted with your final copy. Do not submit another Annotated Bibliography. You do not need to use quotations in the rough draft outline, but noting where you might do so is acceptable. You can also insert the quotations if you wish.
To elaborate:
You will need a minimum of 2 sources with at least one quote from each source. I would think that you will need at least one quote per paragraph. This is a research paper. The purpose is for you to document your research. If you use facts that an ordinary person would not know about one of the authors, then you must cite that fact. If you use the same source for all information in one paragraph and all the quotes are from the same page, then you can have one quote for that paragraph. If you have multiple sources within one paragraph, then use multiple internal citations. It depends on your paper. Cite your research with as many citations as you need to make to write your paper and to avoid plagiarism. It is better to have too many citations than not enough.
***************************************************************************************************************************
Reminder: The research paper is based on one of the authors we have read this semester, using at least two of the sources you researched for your Annotated Bibliography. If you need a refresher on details, review the Annotated Bibliography instructions.

Study the IEEE standard for requirements documents (IEEE/ANSI 830-1998) before completing this assignment.
This assignment will be an integrated part of your proposal. The assignment has two parts:
A. Requirements Specifications
Clearly state functional, usability, and safety requirements. Requirements must be at higher level of abstraction without mentioning the use of technology (unless technology use is a core requirement). Follow the format given in IEEE 830 standard to complete this part of the assignment. Refer to sample proposals for examples of requirements.
B. System Level Design
Show a block diagram or a system diagram of your project identifying all the key sub systems. Use separate diagrams, if necessary, to show the details of the sub-systems. The diagram should identify all sub-systems and labeled arrows showing information and control flows among the subsystems. Identify the team member responsible for developing the subsystem.
(((((((Provide a description of the system and 1-2 paragraph description of each of the sub-systems. The team member responsible for the subsystem must write the description of the subsystem.)))))))
Describe the states and state transitions in your system and subsystems. Show a state diagram(s) for your system. Describe two scenarios (use cases) for your system and how states transition in these cases.
