Lab Report Assignment: Investigating the Effect of Salt on Ice Melting
Objective:
Students will conduct an experiment to observe how the addition of salt affects the rate at which ice melts. They will collect data, create a graph, and write a short lab report based on their findings.
Experiment Overview:
In this experiment, students will measure the time it takes for ice to melt in different salt concentrations.
Materials Needed:
Ice cubes (about 10 cubes)
Table salt (sodium chloride)
Clear plastic or glass containers (3)
Measuring spoons
Stopwatch or timer
Notebook for recording data
Thermometer (optional)
Procedure:
Setup: Prepare three containers and label them as follows:
Container A: No salt (control)
Container B: 1 tablespoon of salt
Container C: 2 tablespoons of salt
Add Ice: Place 3 ice cubes in each container.
Start the Experiment:
Begin the timer as soon as the ice is added to each container.
Observe the melting process, and note the time it takes for each ice cube to completely melt.
Record Data: After all ice has melted, record the time taken for each container.
Repeat: If time allows, repeat the experiment to ensure accuracy and calculate the average time taken for each condition.
Lab Report Structure:
Your lab report should be 1-2 pages (excluding the cover page) and include the following sections:
Title: “The Effect of Salt on the Melting Rate of Ice”
Introduction:
Explain the purpose of the experiment and the science behind why salt affects ice melting.
State your hypothesis regarding how salt will influence the melting rate.
Materials and Methods:
List the materials used.
Describe the experimental procedure clearly.
Results:
Present the collected data in a table (as shown above).
Create a line graph showing the average melting time for each container.
Discussion:
Analyze your results. How did salt affect the melting rate of ice?
Discuss any trends observed in your data.
Identify potential sources of error and suggest improvements for future experiments.
Conclusion:
