This position paper will consist of two parts:
The first, and primary, part of the paper will establish your own framework for understanding and governing global environmental change (~1000 words)
The voice of this paper will speak on behalf of Clapp and Dauvergne to convey their points and then it will situate your unique position in relation to the book. It will use plenty of evidence from across the book chapters to explain your reasoning, and it will supplement book excerpts with real-life examples taken from the grey literature (e.g. respected newspaper or magazine articles, etc.) to support your own argument. Please cite references and direct quotes using the APA Citation Style.
The second part of your paper will identify a narrative that accompanies your framework (~400 words)
When you have concluded your argument, please develop 1-2 narratives that distill the meaning of your proposed framework into a single sentence. To prepare for this component of the paper, read Diana Liverman’s 2009 article about the narratives governing climate change (linked above). As you explain your narrative’s meaning, please demonstrate how it is different from the three identified by Liverman in her article.

This paper is meant to be integrative, drawing from across the chapters read for class, while developing your own personal argument. Some guiding questions you might address are:
How important is the global environmental crisis in shaping your understanding global environmental change? Have you seen evidence of the global environmental crisis in your life?
What are the principal causes of environmental deterioration?
Who are the actors and what are the entities driving environmental deterioration? Is population control or consumption a more powerful driver of environmental deterioration?
How important are economic growth and property rights in deteriorating the global environment?
What are the ecological consequences of globalization? Does globalization and trade ultimately benefit or harm the environment? Be specific.
How important is global inequality to understanding global environmental change? Is global inequality an impediment to global environmental governance, and if yes, how much inequality is permissible while still protecting the global environment?
How important are states in mediating environmental deterioration? What is needed to alter the rationale, functions, and democratic procedures of states along more ecologically sensitive lines?
How important are international institutions, such as the WB, WTO, IMF, UN Environmental Program (including IFCC), and others, to global sustainability and climate governance? How effective are they? Be specific.
How important are community organizations, NGOs, and social movements in expressing leadership in addressing global environmental deterioration and sustainability? How effective are they? Be specific.
