The focus of this virtual investigation is DNA. This virtual crime scene contains materials and objects that can be processed to find and compare DNA evidence. Other items may be meaningful without any forensic processing. These items can be identified as potential evidence but are not the primary focus of this virtual reality experience.
This experience will be an exercise in observing, evaluating, interpreting, and reporting. For purposes of this assignment, you are a lone Virtual Investigator who is working on the case.
IMPORTANT: In this lab, the investigation has just begun. You cannot access a medical examiner to determine the cause of death. As an investigator, you have no access to the results of forensic testing. You don’t even need to know the procedure for DNA comparison or what the results should look like. During evidence collection in a real investigation, you will not have any DNA results. Rather you must focus on the evidence at hand and the logic of the investigation. You will identify possible evidence to test for DNA. If that item was tested for DNA, what if we discover a DNA match to the victim? What if we discover a DNA match to a suspect? What would the result mean? What if we discover no DNA match? What would that mean? What if we find no DNA?
The Virtual Investigator will do the following:
1) Observe: carefully observe the death scene to gain information and identify items of potential evidence.
2) Evaluate: make judgments about the nature and/or value of potential evidence
3) Interpret: explain the meaning of an item (or set of items) of potential evidence.
4) Report: give a written account of the possible evidence, how it would be processed, what the results could be, and what those results would mean.

Using the assignments completed across the required core criminal justice major courses as evidence, each student in the CRJU 4908 Senior Seminar class is required to write a statement, at least five pages long, that
articulates how the completion of both their General Education and criminal justice major coursework has prepared them, overall, for career success and prepared them to be better equipped to achieve other life goals. In
addition, this written statement must discuss how the completion of assignments in the seven required core criminal justice courses provides evidence that they achieved each of the seven goals put forth by The
Department of Criminal Justice.

A brief 2 page research paper on how eyewitness identification and testimony can be improved, for example double blind lineups.

Literature Review (relevant literature): Devote a section of your paper for an analysis of the relevant scholarly literature to your topic of interest. Remember to utilize scholarship from the myriad of disciplines (history, sociology, CLJ, philosophy, economics, education, youth development, ethnic studies, LGBTQA studies, gender and women’s studies, political science, urban planning, medicine, etc.). Speak to why the literature you’ve chosen is specifically important to your research. Don’t ramble or get into tangents. Keep the literature review concise and specific to your area of interest (25 points).
Discovery: This section is dedicated to what you have discovered in relationship to your investigation. Based on your findings, do you think people are beginning to pay attention to your topic of interest? If so, why? If not, why do you think they are not paying attention? Again, be specific. Tangents dilute meaning (25 points).
Conclusion/Discussion/Implications: State whether or not there are any specific groups locally, nationally or internationally that are currently addressing your topic of interest. Report as to why your topic of interest is relevant and the potential challenges in further research on dismantling the school/prison nexus (15 points).
Citations: Depending on your discipline, use proper citation (i.e. APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.) (10 points).

The Term Paper Assignment is designed to expand upon, but not copy or restate, the previous assignment. For this assignment, students will create a systematic review that includes and expands upon the program evaluation. In this systematic review of the evaluation literature for the selected criminal justice program, students will synthesize the existing evaluation literature and present the overall process/outcome findings.
The Term Paper Assignment will consist of at least 15 double-spaced pages (excluding title page, references, figures, illustrations, or other extraneous elements outside the main body of the paper).
