Exam Content
One of the best ways to understand the criminal justice process is to examine the work of the people who are on the frontlines. Law enforcement has a variety of roles and functions within your local community, and many are unaware of these roles and functions.
Imagine you have been asked to provide information to your community at a town hall meeting about the functions of your local police department. You have been asked to provide a handout to the people who attend.
Consider the research you completed in Week 1 on the following items:
The impact of policing in your community
Community programs offered by the police
Theories of criminal behavior that most align with the goals and programs of police in your community
Write a report to provide to the townhall meeting attendees in which you explain your findings. Respond to the following:
What is the mission of your local police department?
What goals does your local police department have? How do they work to accomplish these goals?
What are the various roles police play in your community? What is their impact?
How do your local police partner with citizens and other entities?
What community programs (e.g., D.A.R.E., Police Explorers) are offered by your local police department? Explain the programs, including the benefits they provide to society and the role the police play in these programs.
Which criminal theories (e.g., biological, psychological, and sociological) most align with the goals or programs you identified? (Refer to Ch. 3, “Explaining Crime,” in your textbook, as needed.)

This paper will be an opportunity to explore a topic related to policing or prisons in greater depth. You should select a topic that will enable you to compare the decades around 1900 with the past 50 years. Both historical eras saw significant growth and change in policing, prisons, and other criminal justice policies and practices. Your final paper should provide insights into the nature and practice of either policing or prisons in both time periods, and stress both similarities and differences over time.
Some dimensions you might consider in your analysis include institutional power and funding, major perceived crime threats, criminological tools/methods/knowledge, social inequities, political pressures, and/or the social forces of race, class and geography. How have governmental policies and economic growth or decline related to crime historically? Why have police and prisons become so central in managing the “dangerous classes” in recent decades?
Use the feedback you have received on your previous work to further refine your thinking and guide your writing. Your final paper should address the prompt above, using a mix of course readings and outside sources. The outside sources can be drawn from academic journals, governmental records, research institutes, and credible news sources. At least three outside sources should be peer-reviewed academic articles. Use the Criminal Justice MaxGuide and/or consult with a librarian to guide your search for peer-reviewed sources. See the resources folder on Blackboard for additional links. More information about sources and paper requirements will be discussed in class.
The final paper should be 6-8 pages, double spaced, with 1-inch margins. Title page and works cited do not count towards the 6-8 pages. It should critically and thoughtfully engage with 2-4 sources from the course readings and 4-6 outside sources. Cite all sources in APA format. Final papers should be uploaded to Blackboard.

Hi there, this is two different assignments. There is no page limit, could be one or two as long as the directions are followed. Two different assignments. One file for each and directions for each.
Building a Case #1
Topic for assignment: The criminal justice system in the United States should implement community policing.
Directions:
This assignment will require you to review and research the proposition above. You have files in the files section of Canvas that will allow you to do the assignment.
As you are reading your articles, think about how they relate to the Stock Issues. If a paragraph identifies a harms argument, highlight that section of the article so that you can come back to it later. (I found it best if you take an article and copy and paste it onto a word doc so that you can place notes or comments on the article).
Once you have identified your harms, inherency, and solvency information in the article, you are ready to complete this assignment.
Formatting
Please use the sample from the previous slide to guide you. You finish production should look similar.
Whenever you are referencing evidence from an article, you need to take the whole paragraph. If you are referencing information across two paragraphs, you will take both paragraphs. Then highlight and bold the parts of the paragraph(s) that best identify the argument you are making. Make sure that when you highlight and bold a paragraph(s), you are not going against the author′s intent. Meaning, if the author is saying, ″the government should not raise taxes,″ and you only highlight the following ″the government should not raise taxes,″ you would not be conveying the author′s intent, and your grade would suffer.
After you have copied and pasted the block of text and highlighted the information that you want to use to complete your arguments, you are ready to write your claims. Remember, we are following a policy stock issue paradigm. When you are constructing a case, you will follow harms, inherency, plan, and solvency patterns. So, you must have a harms claim, an inherency claim, a plan of action, and a solvency claim in that order.
Once you have completed your claims, the block of text with the key information highlighted and bolded, you are ready to insert your citation in the middle of the claim and the block of text. The citation should consist of the author′s name, the author′s credentials (if it helps your argument), date of publication, the publisher, title of the article, and the URL or DOI number.
Case #2 6:4 Reaction Assignment – Construct an Advantage to Your Case Assignment: Construct an Advantage for Your Case
Overview
After completing the Building a Case Using Harms, Inherency, Plan, & Solvency assignment, you are ready to complete your Affirmative Constructive Case by adding an Advantage. You will be required to add an advantage position to the case you completed in Module 700, Sample – Harms, Inherency, Plan, Solvency [add Advantage]-1.docx Download Sample – Harms, Inherency, Plan, Solvency [add Advantage]-1.docx. Please review the lecture and Advantage Sample before you attempt to complete this assignment.
Instructions:
Step One: Conduct your research.
I recommend reading a couple of articles and looking for particular arguments in the article that would support your uniqueness, internal link, impact, and link.
Outline your argument by forming the Claim arguments for each position in your Advantage: uniqueness, internal link, impact, and link.
Remember, uniqueness should be a different issue that your HARM argument doesn′t cover.
For example, on the education topic, if the HARM is teen pregnancy, the uniqueness claim in the Advantage could not be about teen pregnancy.
The internal link discusses what happens in the status quo if the problem in the uniqueness goes unsolved.
The impact discusses why whatever you discuss in the internal link is bad.
The link discusses how passing the PLAN would solve the problem discussed in the uniqueness.
Once your claims are complete, add the evidence from the articles.
Formatted the same way as you see in the examples. Don′t forget to add the author information, highlighting, and bold font.
Remember, you have to add at least one paragraph. If you get information from two consecutive paragraphs, you must include the entirety of both paragraphs.
