The writing assignment provides an opportunity for you to describe your own views on crime causation and apply the theories covered in this course to your views on crime causation. Through this assignment, I want you to develop your personal explanation of crime causation and consider why your thoughts on crime causation are the way they are (i.e., why you feel the way you do about the causes of crime). Make sure to address the following in your essay and incorporate material from the course:
Your general thoughts on why people break the law.
One or more criminological theories that relate to your general thoughts on why people break the law. Make sure to connect the specific tenants of the theory to your thoughts about why people engage in crime. This section should be the longest section of your essay.
Exceptions or situations that run contrary to your explanation of crime causation. For example, which types of offenses or offenders do not support your position?
Crime policies or programs discussed in class that align with your perspective.

Identify and discuss the various punishment philosophies and the goals that accompany each. Which is your preferred method of punishment? Why? Why and how does the theory make rational sense as to why crime exists and who commits a crime? This submission should be the topic you selected to write about for the final theory paper.

Much of the job of a criminal justice professional involves problem-solving and dealing with “difficult” people. This requires criminal justice and law enforcement employees to master customer service.
What has your internship experience or any job experience taught you about dealing effectively with people that do not want to cooperate with you?
What have you done to improve your customer service delivery method?
How have you learned to be effective in dealing with difficult people as an intern?
What will be the hardest thing about working with difficult people when you are in the field?

After reading this chapter, how has your opinion changed regarding racial discrimination in the criminal justice system? In other words, if you previously thought it was rare, what are your thoughts now? If you thought it was only in policing (or sentencing, etc.), were you surprised to see how prevalent it is throughout the system? How can we change this? It’s not just a racial issue, but a gendered racial issue, and it’s affecting juveniles as well – see the following webpage: “Juvenile Justice”. As social science students, these statistics and articles should be alarming. It’s not just criminal justice with a race issue and we all have a part in fixing it. Please choose one of the articles listed on the website. Briefly summarize it (no more than 50 words) then answer the following questions or discuss how the article relates to what we have learned so far. What can you do to affect change? Or, if you think you cannot (or should not) affect change, why not?
Discuss how you think the American justice system would be different if it were inquisitorial instead of adversarial. Would you recommend making this change? Why or why not?
Read Case Study 4.1 on page 106. See article “When Prosecutors Defend a Wrongful Conviction, Who Prosecutes the Real Perp?” and then read “Lead prosecutor apologizes to death row exoneree”. It can be assumed all these prosecutors initially acted in good faith – why the unethical behavior of some to accept and correct an error? What are your thoughts about Marty Shroud’s apology and his argument for compensation? Is he acting ethically?

Which part of Gottfredson and Hirschi’s theory do you find the most believable? Which part of their theory do you think is incorrect? Explain why.
