CMRJ524 B001 Winter 2024
The Research Paper will be 19% of the course grade and consist of 14-20 double spaced pages (excluding title page and reference page). The research will address one of the following five topics:
1. Terrorism and Organized Crime: Similarities and Differences (Connected to Course Learning Objective #4, i.e., Report on how terrorism differs from organized crime).
This paper must have at least 10 references from primary sources, for example, the weekly readings, peer-reviewed journals, etc. The use of newspapers, news magazines, and similar periodicals must be kept to a minimum but a fine for background material. Students are encouraged to use the APUS online library in order to utilize peer-reviewed journals to the maximum extent possible.
Web sources should be evaluated based on the site sponsor, among other things, such as: How long has the site existed? Is there sufficient information to judge credentials, authenticity, credibility, and bias? Are facts supported by cited sources? Is the material published only on the web? Wikipedia is not an acceptable source.
The evaluation of the paper will be based upon the rubric below.
The research paper must be written using the American Psychological Association (APA) style 7th Edition. In part, this must include the following: (b) Times New Roman style, (c) 12-point font, (d) double-spaced, with (e) 1-inch page margins all around.

The use of criminological theories can be positive. If law enforcement officers understand the theories and can pick out which theory works for each situation, they can get the best possible outcome.
I think an issue with using criminological theories is that utilizing just one or two of the theories can limit the understanding law enforcement has. But if they use too many then their ideas may contradict each other.
The problem with generalizing and stereotyping in criminal justice is it can cause issues of making false assumptions and wasting time and resources. It can cause innocent people to be targeted and guilty people to be passed up.
In your response to two of your peers, identify one benefit or limitation they may not have considered and explain why you think that might be an important consideration, and, if possible, identify one negative consequence of generalizing or stereotyping they identified that you did not consider. Remember always to be respectful when replying to peers, even if you do not agree with their responses. In 2-3 sentences.

Hello,
The benefits of understanding criminal theories is helping one gain the understanding of crimes and the criminal justice system.
The  limitations of applying theories is that all behaviors cannot be explained by existing theories.  (IPL.org., 2015).
When stereotyping criminal behaviors you can possibly overlook the true cause of someone’s actions.
This is the easiest way to explain it, you cannot say that one certain thing has caused the problems, and you cannot say that someone’s actions is what caused someone else to do wrong.  It is not true that someone acts like someone else for the same reason.  Each person is different.
Thanks

Overview
In this assignment, you will explain how cultural views and values drive human behavior, and explain the importance of applying theory versus making broad generalizations to explain behaviors.
Prompt
In Module Five, you learned how cultural views and values drive human behavior. In this module, you learned how to explain the importance of applying theory versus using generalizations to explain behaviors. You will now apply this knowledge to using theory when analyzing criminal behavior in general. This application of knowledge will help you prepare for the submission of Project Three in Module Eight, in which you will focus on specific criminal behavior.
First, review the Project Three Guidelines and Rubric.
Next, in 100–150 words, explain how cultural views and values drive human behavior. Include the following in your explanation:

What is the correlation between deviance and culture?
How do culture and geographical location influence whether certain acts are deemed violations of law?

Then, in 100–150 words, explain the importance of applying theory versus making broad generalizations to explain behaviors. Include the following in your explanation:

What are the advantages of applying theory to explain behaviors?
What are the disadvantages of making broad generalizations?

Specifically, the following rubric criteria must be addressed:
Explain how cultural views and values drive human behavior.
Explain the importance of applying theory versus making broad generalizations to explain behaviors.
What to Submit
This assignment should be 200–300 words in length. Any references must be cited in APA style. See the Shapiro Library APA Style Guide for more information on citations.

q1
Prisons  are, in many respects, a microcosm of society. In 2030, the last baby  boomer will turn 65 and one in five Americans will be older than 65.  This trend in our nation’s aging population is also represented within  the nation’s prisons system. For instance, the number of prisoners age  50 or older experienced a 330 percent increase from 1994 to 2011,  therefore, the growth rate of older prisoners—especially those 65 and  older—is expected to increase significantly.

Read the following article before responding to this question, Serving our country to serving time: The rise and value of veteran treatment courts
There  is obviously tremendous value in the establishment of veteran treatment  courts, especially among those diagnosed with Post-traumatic stress  disorder (PTSD) and/or a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Is  there a need to create “First Responder Courts” given that many first  responders, including those in law enforcement and corrections,  suffering from depression, anxiety, and PTSD leading to many dying by  suicide. Develop a persuasive argument both for and against the  establishment of first responder courts.

Week 3 Project: Drafting a Policy and Program
For this assignment, you will draw upon the work you have completed thus far, and take your intervention plan through the next two stages. First, you’ll draft a policy and a program in response to the problem you have been considering, then you’ll choose which approach is preferable. Having made the choice between program and policy, you’ll then create an action plan for moving forward.
Your written report should cover the following specific areas:
Program
Describe the program you intend to create.
Define the target population; who or what is the target?
Define the job descriptions of the staff and list the skills and training required.
Policy
Draft a specific policy statement that addresses the problem.
Define the target population of the policy; who are included and who are not?
Identify the responsible authority; who is required to carry out the policy and the responsibilities?
Intervention Selection
Choose between the program and policy options that you have described, and justify your choice. Explain why you have chosen to proceed with the intervention that you selected.
Action Plan
This section of your report will present your action plan for implementing the program or policy.
Your action plan should follow the specific steps presented in the lecture and readings:
Identify resources needed and make cost projections.
List the specific activities that will need to be accomplished and assign responsibility for each task to a particular employee. You may refer to job titles rather than make up employee names.

The Department of Corrections (DOC) has identified the lack of education credent

The Department of Corrections (DOC) has identified the lack of education credentials as a key factor in reoffending. In other words, inmates with a high school diploma are less likely to reoffend upon release as compared to inmates without a high school diploma. On the average, 80 percent of the inmates without a high-school degree reoffend as compared to 40 percent of inmates with a degree.
Programmers at DOC have identified two model programs:
The first program is called Education First; the outcome of the program is passing the high-school equivalency examination. This program has undergone extensive outcome evaluations, and the success rate is figured to be 50 percent, which means that 50 percent of the inmates are successful in passing the high-school equivalency examination.
The second program is General Education Development Preparatory program (GED Prep). The outcome of this program is also passing the high-school equivalency examination. The success rate of this program is identified as 80 percent, which means that 80 percent of the inmates that take this program are successful in passing the high-school equivalency examination.
The first program, Education First, costs $500 per pupil, and the second program, GED Prep, costs $5000 per pupil. Currently, the cost of incarceration is $32,000 per year.
Since the DOC has experienced decreasing budgets over the past 20 years, cost of programs is a very real concern.
Which of the two—Education First or the GED Prep program should be adopted? Why? Analyze the scenario and the programs and provide a logical justification for your answer considering:
The quality of the programs
The goal(s) and objective(s) of the programs
The policies’ design
The success rate of the programs
The cost considerations

Questions
This chapter of the text opens with the issue of defining the term probable cause. The term is a difficult one to define and has been addressed by a number of United States Supreme Court cases. Discuss the different cases that address the definition of probable cause and their impact on policing.
In United States v. Leon (1984) the Court held that five-month-old information from an informant is “stale” and cannot be used to establish probable cause. In the same case the Court stated that the issue of staleness “must be determined by the circumstances of each case.” Discuss situations in which evidence would not be “stale” even for a considerable length of time.
