Purpose: You will select an issue to explore from Beggars in Spain, come up with a claim backed by reasoning and evidence, argue your issue from the fictional context of the novel using analogies from the real world to back up your reasoning, and provide a refutation. Your reasoning and evidence will come from the novel and from the real world (outside sources). Beggars in Spain need to be a part of every step. Meaning, that you will back up your claim with reasons from Beggars in Spain, and your evidence will come from Beggars and Spain and outside sources (sometimes the evidence will be from a source, but other times it will come from your own cleverly written analogies and/or prior knowledge).

Listen
Getting Started
The number of people who are released from state and federal prisons each week in the United States is staggering. Research tells us a high percentage of those released from prison will re-offend and return to prison or jail. There has to be a solution to the prison’s revolving doors. The criminal justice policy on correctional treatment and rehabilitation may be the solution to this problem. What if those offenders preparing to exit prison completed a correctional treatment program that enabled them to be successful with their families, in their finances, and employment? What if those convicted on minor, non-violent crimes were able to receive rehabilitation that empowered them to become contributing members of society and never return to jail? Let us evaluate the criminal justice policy of correctional treatment and rehabilitation.
Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:
Evaluate whether rehabilitation should take place in the community or correctional facilities.

Reach Chapter 14, Criminal Justice Policy: Origins and Effectiveness
Navigate to the threaded discussion and respond to the prompts:
Evaluate whether rehabilitation should take place in the community or correctional facilities. Include offender characteristics, types of criminal offenses and any other factors you considered.
Discuss the impact of Robert Martinson 1974 research titled “What works? Questions and answers about prison reform”? on the rehabilitation era.
RESPONSE TO THE PROMPT:
Cite all sources and use proper APA formatting for all in-text citations and references.
Your response to the discussion prompt is due by the end of the fourth day of the workshop.
FOLLOW-UP POSTINGS:

While students may agree with each other, each follow-up posting is expected to go beyond just agreeing. Each follow-up posting should add something original, substantive, and course-related to the discussion.
Your follow-up postings should engage classmates and move the discussion forward in intentionally scholarly ways. Some ways to do this include:
introducing related information from an appropriate source that is professional, reliable and valid
including a direct quote from the text along with your observations about the importance of the quote within the context of the discussion
including a paraphrase of the text/assigned reading (with an in-text citation that includes a page number)
challenging commonly-held thinking by introducing published research findings
examining a workshop concept from a scholarly perspective that is not addressed in the text
providing applicable illustrations from current events
pointing out connections/common ideas/themes discussed so far
