OVERVIEW: Have you been involved in an organization where the story “told” about the flow of communication throughout the organization was somewhat or even drastically different than the actual story “lived” out on a day-to-day basis? Where the organizational chart is not an accurate depiction of the complex networks of decision-making, advice, support, instruction, and interaction that have been built up over time? Or perhaps you’re one of the lucky ones who has been part of an organization that “talks the talk and walks the walk” – one that, for the most part, has an organizational chart that actually reflects the interaction that occurs throughout the organization. Here is your chance to reflect on that organization’s communication flow. In this assignment, you will examine the actual “lived” network in comparison to the version presented in the organizational chart. This is your opportunity to reflect on just how connected or disconnected that formal organizational chart is from the lived communication network of the people within. In a 3-4 paged, double-spaced essay with some additional attachments, your objective is to: (a) DESCRIBE the degree of alignment or disconnect between the organizational chart and 1 type of communication network there, and (b) EXPLAIN one or more reasons WHY you think that alignment or disconnect occurs ESSAY STRUCTURE & DELIVERABLES: The essay should include the following elements: INTRODUCTION: An introductory paragraph where you briefly summarize the organization, the nature of your involvement in it, and a summary of your general thesis (i.e., whether there is alignment or disconnect between organizational chart and actual communication network and why) DESCRIBE THE NETWORK & OVERLAP/DISCONNECT: A description (about 1 page) of the type of communication network (e.g., task, social, advice, support, decision-making, etc.), the various linkages in the network (e.g., stars, bridgers, isolates, intensity/reciprocity of links) and the degree of overlap or disconnect with the organizational chart. Make sure to provide concrete evidence and examples to fully convey this. For example, if you claim that a person identified in the organizational chart is a “star,” I expect to see an illustration of this person’s “star” centrality. ANALYZE WHY: Then, in about 1 page, analyze some possible reasons why the overlap/disconnect between the lived network and the formal organizational chart exists. To help you come up with ideas to address this “why” question, refer to the material in Chapter 5 that discusses some of the challenges with formal and informal upward, downward, horizontal communication (e.g., upward distortion, silencing). ATTACHMENTS: In addition to the written essay portion, please attach a copy of (a) the organizational chart and (b) the communication network you discussed. As long as it is clear and legible, the chart and network can be hand drawn, though a typed version of both is appreciated (you can use Word and PowerPoint tools like SmartArt, for example). The network should clearly illustrate the elements of linkage reciprocity and intensity in some identifiable way (for example, arrows between people to indicate the degree of reciprocity). IMPORTANT TIPS & ADVICE: Selecting an Organization: Please make sure you select and organization that you are highly familiar with and can speak to both how it claims to operate (organizational chart) versus how it actually operates (a lived communication network). You will need to generate a valid network depiction for some type of communication, so it’s essential that you have access and familiarity. Also, having access to the formal organizational chart is useful. Remember, you have lots of options: internships, part-time jobs, athletic and recreational organizations, student organizations, churches, nonprofit organizations, etc. How Big of a Chart and Network Should I Focus On? Once you choose your organization, ensure that you provide a complete chart and network, but also one that is a realistic size to examine and discuss in a 3-4 page paper. So for example, if you are writing about a work-study job at Baylor, you do NOT need to provide the entire BU organizational chart: just focus on your particular office, department, or unit as a sub-organization within. On the other hand, if you are on a basketball team, I expect for you to look beyond just the players, and also include the coaching and administrative staff directly tied to the team. Aiming for A-Level Performance? Look at the grading rubric before you begin writing. This will give you a clear sense of what I’m looking for when I grade. Also, make sure that you know your material in chapter 5 – drawing from concepts and ideas there is important for your descriptions and analysis.

Imagine by John Lennon (1971) is one of the possible alternative artifacts. The song utilizes a matching rhetorical approach to cover the concepts of peace, oneness, and social changes. Similar to Dylan’s piece of work, the song brings in queries on the probability of a more favorable world and poses a challenge to the audience to forecast a warless future. Use this for the artifact and no need to be super smart about the paper make it less intelligent and not sound like AI use please. Welcome to Comm 121 Assignment #1. This is a chance for you to show what you know and think about the social impacts of new media technologies in your own words, in response to a prompt that I provide. The prompt is the article “Here’s How Generative AI Depicts Queer People” Links to an external site. Q2. This article by Reece Rogers in Wired Magazine raises concerns about the results when generative AI tools are used to create images of LGBTQ+ people. Compare these concerns to an example we have discussed in this class where communication technologies created discriminatory outcomes. What similarities and/or differences do you see between these 2 cases? Keep your answer under 250 words. Q3. We have learned about 2 ways of theorizing media technologies and their social impacts: technological determinism and social construction of technology. Which of these perspectives do you think best helps explain the implications of generative AI on visual representations of LGBTQ people? Using our course materials, clearly define the theory you are choosing to work with (worth 1 point), and then apply the theory to the social impacts of new technology discussed in the Wired article (for 2 points). Keep your answer under 250 words. Q4. What do you see as the possibilities and/or risks with images (still or moving) made using generative AI? Are there other examples of stereotyping or bias in AI images that you’re aware of, or that you’re concerned about? I’m interested here in your personal observations and experiences, so be as specific as you can. If you’re discussing a specific example, include the link or image so your grader can see what you are analyzing. Keep your response under 200 words.

Purpose For this assignment I am looking for you to explore a different culture you do not affiliate yourself with. A way for us to understand intercultural communication or how to communicate with people that don’t share our backgrounds is by immersing oneself into a different culture to see how others interact and define the world around them. Ask a friend of yours if they have a culture that you don’t associate with and if they do ask them if they could take you to a location where other people within that culture gather. For instance, my friend associates herself with the record collecting culture, so she took me to Amoeba Records in Hollywood, CA and I learned about this culture from people looking to purchase records rather than just listening to music on Spotify. Skills: In this assignment you will: Use communication theory to explain communication phenomena. Analyze the relationship between communication and culture by engaged with lived experiences. Explain how various people communicate and create culture outside your own cultural identity. Writing a narrative that is based off of “data” that was collected. Knowledge: This assignment will also help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge in this discipline: cultural identity positionality intersectionality cultural spaces body politics ascribed/avowed identity Task For this assignment I am looking for a 2-3 page write up of your experience in an environment you are unfamiliar with (i.e. Catholic church, an LGBTQ+ bar, a comicbook store). As soon as you leave the place, write down what you observed (think “thick description” here: give as much details as possible so that you can remember as much as possible for when you write your reflection). When you write your reflection be as detailed as possible so that I can picture myself being in this space as well. Think of your role here as an ethnographer – experiencing another culture from an outsider’s perspective. Some things that you can pay attention to: How did people interact with each other? How did they interact with you, if at all? How did you feel in this place? Do you have any questions you would ask if you could ask anyone? For me it can be “A comicbook store”.

Create your own personal model of communication. You may use whatever materials you desire to construct your model of the process of communication. Some examples include: 3-D structure, mobile, poster, collage, book, comic strip, painting etc. Your creative project should demonstrate an actual “situation” or communication encounter/interaction between at least two people and the transactional nature of communication.Example: You show two people talking to each other (sender, receiver, message, and channel). Their messages are in bubbles (like in cartoons) to each other (messages, feedback); the dog is barking on the end of the sender’s line (physical interference) and the receiver feels anxious about a math test they has earlier (psychological interference). The communication takes place at night in the living room (context/situation).
Requirements:Must be neat and have color
May not use pencil only
You may print/cut out pictures from magazines, personal photos, or newspapers if you cannot draw the pictures neatly yourself.
You must be creative!

Here’s a creative idea for a communication model project that illustrates the transactional nature of communication between two people.Project Title: “A Café Conversation”
Materials Needed:ONLINE Poster board or a large canvas
Colored markers and paints
Magazines for cutting out pictures
Craft materials (e.g., paper, fabric, stickers)
String or yarn for connecting elements
Scissors and glue
Steps to Create the Model:Background Setting:Paint or collage a café scene as the background. Include tables, chairs, a coffee counter, and maybe even a window showing a busy street outside. Use vibrant colors to create a welcoming atmosphere.
Characters:Cut out or draw two people sitting at a table. One can be holding a coffee cup (the sender) and the other can be leaning in attentively (the receiver). Use different colors for their clothing to distinguish them.
Communication Elements:Message Bubbles: Create speech bubbles coming from each character. In the sender’s bubble, write a message (e.g., “Did you hear about the new project at work?”). In the receiver’s bubble, write the response (e.g., “Yes! I’m really excited about it!”).
Feedback Arrows: Use arrows to show the feedback loop, illustrating how the sender’s message is received and responded to by the receiver.
Interferences:Physical Interference: Draw a small dog outside the café, barking (e.g., representing noise). Use arrows or lines to show how it might distract the sender.
Psychological Interference: Show a thought bubble above the receiver’s head with images or words representing their anxieties (e.g., “I hope I did well on the math test.”).
Context: Add small elements to indicate the time of day (like a sun or moon) and other people in the background to show the bustling café environment.
Channels:Use string or yarn to connect the characters to the background, representing the channel of communication. You could use different colors for different channels (verbal, non-verbal, etc.).
Finishing Touches:Decorate the borders with stickers or small drawings related to communication (e.g., phones, letters, exclamation marks).
Add a title at the top: “Transactional Communication: A Café Conversation.”
Neatness & Color:Ensure everything is glued down securely and that the colors are bright and appealing. Avoid any use of pencil; rely entirely on markers, paints, or printed materials.
