Chapter Four examines the second case study in this dissertation, Saudi women empowerment, and how the U.S. media coverage framed the Princess Rema campaign’s performance. The chapter provided a detailed exploration of how Princess Reema’s campaign has been a major driving force in promoting women’s empowerment and improving the job status of women in Saudi Arabia.
It shows that the former Saudi Arabia ambassador to the United States, Princess Reema bint Bandar, is the most vocal advocate working to help advocate for more job opportunities for women and promote gender equality in the country. her campaign BALADI and SAUDIZATION.
1- (A) Add an intro telling readers where the chapter will take them and an overview of what the chapter is about. (B) State in a few sentences what media outlets you looked at. (C) then the background job status for women before and now, women participation in political office, serving in the military and the armed forces. Take decision-making positions they can’t have before, like the president of King Abdulaziz University or the US ambassador, then the other section. Etc.
2- Use the language of framing theory in the chapter.
3- Add more media coverage (citing the media itself); it must be US newspapers only. Use other scholars’ work as a background, and state how you add to what they wrote. Mix and find from other scholars with your own findings.

1. Analysis Paper One Prompt
Select and analyze three related examples of wartime propaganda. The examples do not have to be
from the United States, but should come from or relate to a war, from World War I to the present,
in which the United States was a combatant. This may include World War I, World War II, the
Korean Conflict, the War in Vietnam, Gulf Wars I and II, or some aspect of “The War on Terror.”
Explicate a theory of propaganda to analyze these images. This should arise from our readings
including Bernays or Ellul, but you also may use additional sources or produce an original theory
while explaining how it relates to the work of earlier theorists. Your work should engage this
question: what do these examples reveal about propaganda as a discourse of war? You may refine
this further depending on your project: What do these examples show us about French culture at
war? Or, what do these examples show us about the importance of food security in war? Etc.
Note that it is often useful to discuss how examples of propaganda arise from national cultures and
make use of their values or common traits. How are these examples calibrated to work on the

Guidance
In week 3 you chose a “monster” from pop culture and discussed how to understand it via Monster Theory. This week, we learned text analysis tools (semiotics, psychoanalysis, and political economy).
In this essay, you can use the same “monster” text you analyzed last week OR choose a new popular culture text such as a movie or TV series.
You will discuss how to use each of the 3 text analysis tool to analyze your selected cultural text.
Organize your paper using the following headings and address each prompt below each. Link to any web resources you use (really only need to do this in part 1). Include photos, screen shots, etc., to help illustrate different aspects of your analysis. Submit the essay as a .doc or .pdf (not Google docs).
Part 1 – Cultural Text Selection
a. Identify which cultural text (e.g., movie, book, etc.) that you selected to analyze. Choose a text that has enough detail and narrative for you to analyze.
b. Do some research into the contexts of the production of the text. For example if it is a movie, who directed it? Who were the stars? What was the production studio? How much did it cost to make? Was it popular, and how much did it make?
c. You can include the political/economy/industry information here as background info on your text OR include it as a separate section.

Semiotics

c. Some symbols are internal, like a storm symbolizing conflict in the text. Others can symbolize aspect of our real world. Try to come up with at least one example of each.

Psychoanalysis
a. Describe how you would do a text analysis with this “psychoanalysis tool.”
b. Look for representations or issues of gender, race, sexuality, or family issues in the text. Focus in on one area that is being developed in the text. How is the issue central to the text? Does it conform to our social norms or perhaps go against them?
c. Describe one reason that using this “psychoanalysis tool” is useful. “Using psychoanalysis to analyze this text shows…..”
Political Economy
a. Describe how you would do a text analysis with this “political economy tool.”
b. How might $$ issues or industry practices have lead to certain character portrayals or plots lines in the story or how it was marketed towards certain audience.
c. Describe one reason that using this “political economy tool” is useful in a text analysis.
Part 3 – In one concluding paragraph say which text analysis tool you found most interesting to use and which one was most useful for analyzing the particular culture text you chose to analyze.
