Purpose: This goal of this speech is for you to deliver a persuasive speech that proposes a change
to an existing federal, state, or local law. You will use this skill in the workplace to persuade
others to support your point of view (i.e. pitching a product, gaining a client).
Task: In this 8-10—minute speech, you will select an existing federal, state, or local law and
persuade your audience that the law should be changed. You should use Monroe’s Motivated
Sequence organizational pattern for this speech. Each of the 5 steps in Monroe’s Motivated
Sequence should be identifiable in your speech. You will need to do research in order to prepare
and develop this speech. You should back up your thoughts with supporting material. Use the
FIU Library resources to find credible sources for your speech. You should cite at least 7 sources
using APA style both verbally in your speech and in your outline. An outline is required for this
speech. A visual aid, such as PowerPoint, Prezi, handout, or physical object/s, is required for this
speech as well. You should have two audience members.
A successful speaker will:
Select a topic appropriate for your audience and speech situation.
Use Monroe’s Motivated Sequence organizational pattern.
Avoid logical fallacies.
Include fully developed introduction, main points, conclusion, transitions in your speech.
Write a clear thesis.
Cite the minimum number of sources properly using APA style, both verbally and in your
outline.

As you write, imagine you are talking to a friend who has no knowledge of this topic. In short, write the way you speak, using a conversational tone. Also, try to alternate short sentences and longer sentences to make your writing more readable.
Your essay should include five paragraphs, as follows:
Paragraph 1 is your lead paragraph. It will contain an overview of what you have to say in comparing and contrasting the perspectives of Gerhard Lenski, Leslie White, and Alvin Toffler with respect to the evolution of technology.
Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4, are your body paragraphs.
In your essay, use paragraph 2 to describe the perspective of Gerhard Lenski.
In paragraph 3, you’ll write about the perspective of Leslie White.
In paragraph 4, you’ll describe and discuss the perspective of Alvin Toffler.
Paragraph 5 is your summary and conclusion. Here, you’ll compare the three perspectives to show how they are, or may be, similar. You’ll contrast the three perspectives to describe how they’re different. You’ll end this process–and your essay–by expressing your view as to which of these theorists (one or more) offer the most useful insights into the evolution of technology, in your opinion.
Strategic communication plays a pivotal role in crisis and change management by
Strategic communication plays a pivotal role in crisis and change management by providing a structured framework for timely and transparent information dissemination. During crises, it helps manage perceptions, addresses concerns, and mitigates reputational damage. In times of change, it facilitates employee understanding, fostering a positive organizational culture. Clear, consistent messaging underlines leadership credibility, while two-way communication channels enable feedback and adaptation. By aligning communication with organizational goals, strategic communication navigates uncertainties, builds resilience, and helps regain stakeholder trust. Overall, it serves as a critical tool in guiding organizations through challenges, ensuring stability, and fostering resilience in the face of crisis and change.
In your discussion post, address the following:
Why is effective leadership needed during a crisis or organizational change? What can happen if leadership fails during these times?
What are some factors that lead to organizational change?
Provide a thorough explanation of two strategies to deal with crises.

You should submit at least 15 newspaper/scholarly journals/or television news stories over a 3-week period; each should be submitted in proper APA style citation with the article and in a Reference Page.
These newspaper/scholarly journals/or television news stories must be from each of the three weeks. Submitting newspaper/scholarly journals/or television news stories from only the first and/or the second week will not be acceptable and points will be deducted.
Then you are to write a 50-word response giving your opinion on each article and how it relates to what you are learning in Tactical Communications. This can be submitted in a paper format or in a PowerPoint presentation.
You are to submit all the articles and 50-word responses in either a Word document due on the Sunday of Week 3 by 11:59 pm EST.
Each article is worth 5 points in regard to content of the article and the content of your opinion; totaling 75 points.
The remaining 25 points will be used to grade spelling, grammar, and APA citations. Your scrapbook should follow APA format. Help can be found under Getting Started.

Assignment Details
As part of your Final Project in this course, students will write a project proposal and reflect on how your positionality (we’ll discuss this more in class!) informs your proposal. This assignment will be worth 10% of your final course grade and will help prepare you to write your final paper due later in the semester. Even if you plan to work in groups for your final paper, this Positionality Statement/Project Proposal is an INDIVIDUAL assignment. As such, each student will write an essay of ~1,000 words that will be due via canvas on March 21st by 1:30pm. This assignment aims to fulfill CLOs 1-4. Assignment Descriiption
A hallmark of critical approaches to environmental communication is ask how an authors identities (their positionality) inform their views on the environment. This includes careful consideration of how historical context, intersecting identities (e.g., race, gender, class, migration-status…and many others), and personal experience (e.g., privileges, oppressions) of an author influence how they define, write about, and frame environmental issues. A second pillar of critical approaches is to turn critique inward in a self-reflective manner. In this spirit, and as the first part of your Final Project, you will submit a positionality statement / project proposal in which you will reflect upon how your positionality influences your choice of Final Project topic, and how you plan to study it. As you write, please consider two key guidelines:
1) Given that we all hold complex and shifting positions, and given the limited word count for this assignment (see below), you should focus your reflection on one to two of your intersecting identities/positions.
2) As this is a very personal assignment, you will not be graded on the “correctness” of your positionality descriiptions. Rather you will be graded on your level of critical engagement with how the positions you choose to write about influence the scholarly choices you make regarding your final project.

Descriiption: This assignment requires you to (1) select a research topic and (2) design a quantitative study (experiment or survey) that enhances the current state of knowledge on the topic. You’ll need to generate a typed document that follows the instructions provided below. Instructions: Your assignment should have the following sections: 1. Topic of Study: As a first step, select a topic that is both interesting to you and important to society, industry, or both. Notably, your research topic can relate to society generally (e.g., “Why do parents choose not to vaccinate their children?”) or to advertising/public relations/media design specifically (e.g., “Do consumers like green advertising?” or “Does in-stadium advertising enhance the sports consumer experience?”). Note that you need to both select a general topic of interest and pursue a specific research question within that broader topical body. In other words, in this section you should state a specific research question. It is important that you are interested in your research topic and question! This section should be between 50 and 150 words. Note: Given the subject matter of the class, your topic should deal with how people think, feel, or act. For instance, pretend that you’re interested in learning about consumer attitudes toward the so-called “metaverse” (details here: https://www.wired.com/story/what-is-the-metaverse/). Your research question could take on any number of forms, but it should be specifically focus on a specific stakeholder group. An inappropriate question (for example) would be: What are the defining characteristics of the metaverse? An appropriate question (for example) would be: Are American Internet users concerned that the metaverse will have adverse privacy implications? 2. Importance of Topic and Background: After selecting a research topic, you should describe why, exactly, your topic is important to learn more about. You should also provide any/all important background details. As discussed above, your topic can pertain to a broader social issue or an issue that is specifically important to the practice of strategic communication. When describing your topic’s importance, you are required to cite five or more scholarly or syndicated research sources. Make sure that you properly and carefully cite all the sources that you use. This means that you should provide an in-text note that you are citing a piece of external research. In-text citations should include the source name and year the information was published (e.g., eMarketer, 2019). This section should be between 400 and 800 words. Note: You can use as many journalistic sources as you’d like. However, to get full points on the assignment, you’ll need to use/cite at least five scholarly and/or syndicated research sources. 3. Survey or Experiment? After describing your research topic, you should describe whether you will investigate your topic using a survey or an experiment. Your study should rely on/use self-report data. It is important that you provide a rationale for your choice of method here. You should also offer brief descriiption of the population you are interested in learning about, and any sampling techniques you intend to apply. This section should be between 150 and 250 words. 4. Descriiption of Variables: In this section, you should describe the variables that are especially/most important to your study. Be sure to label any independent and dependent variables. This section should be between 100 and 200 words. 5. Participant Experience: In this section, describe how participants will experience your study. In other words, steps will she/he be taken through if they agree to participate in your study? This can be as simple as “Step One: Participant will be randomly assigned to an experimental group; Step 2: Participant will read a short descriiption of the study; …”. This section should be between 150 and 300 words. 6. Questionnaire Items: In this section, provide a list of the questions that you will use in your study. This section should include the questions you will use to measure your variables of interest and any demographic information you intend to collect. Make sure to list all response categories associated with each question. For each question, provide a one-sentence rationale. You should write between 5 and 10 questions. This section should be between 150 and 400 words. 7. Sources Cited Page: You should have a page that provides information for the sources you used when writing your paper. This page does not have a word limit. Your citations should take on the following format: Author last name, author first initial. (year published). Title of research document. Name of source. Hyperlink (if appropriate). An example of this citation style is provided below: Funk, C. (2020). Key findings about Americans’ confidence in science and their views on scientists’ role in society.
