How to engage an adult with trauma.
The most important support you can provide to someone who has experienced trauma is to help them feel safe. Since trauma is about a past intrusive memory showing up in the present, helping the person find some grounding in the present and support them in regulating their nervous system is what is most important.
Don’t insist on talking if the person doesn’t want to. They may need time to be alone with their thoughts. Tell them you are there to listen, whenever they feel ready. Reassure them you care and want to understand as much as possible about what happened to them.
People with PTSD may feel embarrassed to ask for help, so take the initiative and ask them how you and other team members can support them. Use empathic listening and pay close attention to what they say. If they are reluctant to talk, wait for them to open up, and don’t interrupt them when they do start to speak.
Find out as much as you can about distress, so you can understand something about what to expect. Allow the person to talk about what happened, even if they become upset. Don’t insist they need professional help-not everyone who experiences a traumatic event needs therapy.
Using a trauma informed approach (1) ensure physical and emotional safety in your interactions (2) establish trust through respect, transparency and consistency (3) offer the person choice where possible (4) collaborate and share power where possible (5) prioritize their empowerment and sense of self-efficacy.
Lastly, the person sharing their trauma is often looking for validation and empathy. They need you to listen and empathize, and they need your unconditional support and love. A straightforward way of honoring the trust placed in us is by directly acknowledging it (South Pacific private, 2024).

Reaching out to an adult who has experienced trauma may be done in several ways. Being considerate and sensitive to another person’s situation is of utmost importance. It’s also essential to provide a safe space where they may begin to recover by talking about what they’ve been through. According to Pemberton, & Loeb, (2020 pg. 118). Medical professionals who aren’t prepared to inquire about patients’ trauma histories may miss the root cause of the wide range of symptoms reported by sexual assault survivors seeking help from their primary care providers. This may be pretty upsetting, and it can make victims feel rejected and confused and lower their confidence and faith in medical experts. Therefore, to connect effectively with an adult who has experienced trauma, it is essential to listen graciously and without passing judgment, support the individual’s right to use whatever means at their disposal to share their emotions and facilitating the individual’s discovery and use of available supports.

The client has to be made aware of the many ways in which trauma may negatively affect their lives. Trauma may have long-lasting effects on a person’s physical and emotional well-being. The client must be taught about the aftereffects of trauma so they can recognize its manifestations. One of the most prevalent responses to trauma is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but many other mental health problems might arise. It is essential to bring attention to the wide range of feelings that might be caused by trauma.
The purpose of psychoeducation in the trauma field is to educate individuals and communities on the mental, behavioral, somatic, and social consequences of trauma on individuals, families, and communities (communal trauma). When doing psychoeducation on trauma, the first step is to educate those who have experienced trauma with a definition of trauma that sheds light on the essential elements of coping with it.

I would recommend CBT for this case. A central goal of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is to assist the patient in gaining insight into the origins of their maladaptive cognitions and actions (CBT). The social worker must mainly concentrate on building a safe and reliable therapeutic alliance while understanding that trauma may disrupt the portion of an individual to form connections (Brandell, 2020).
Use open-ended questions, allowing the client to share at their level of readiness (e.g., about their trauma). For instance:

            An intervention this qualitative information informed would be client-centered practice (CCP) (Matheson et al., 2022). CCP is focused on the client’s needs based on their experiences and situations. It demands the worker to build trust and rapport with the client by listening to their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, which leads to validation and empowerment of the client (Matheson et al., 2022). This practice also allows the worker to gain information on all holistic factors of the client’s issues (Matheson et al., 2022).  
Explain how you would adapt CCP to be culturally sensitive and relevant for Indigenous communities. Choose a surface structure adaptation that Fennig reviewed and provide two strategies for application with your selected group.
            Specifically, to tailor CCP to be culturally sensitive and relevant for Indigenous communities, a deep understanding of the culture, environment, values, spiritual beliefs, and resources would be needed and then used to implement interventions like harm reduction (Marsiglia et al., 2019). Collaborating with community leaders and elders could help inform workers on implementing CCPs, such as harm reduction (Fennig, 2020). Some ways of adapting any practice using surface structure adaptions would be using the client’s preferred language when intervening with them and, if possible, having a worker of the same cultural background (Fennig, 2020). For example, the workers may be Indigenous themselves and fluent in English and Cree if working with Cree people (Fennig, 2020). This may help build trust between the client and the worker and create feelings of safety and support for the client (Fennig, 2020). There would be no issue with language barriers or misinterpretations between the client and worker, and the worker would have intimate knowledge of the client’s environment and generational trauma and discrimination (Fennig, 2020).

A foundational benefit, such as public health, can have nearly unanimous public agreement even when its reason may differ (Farazmand et al., 2024). Stakeholders like public officials will likely follow the value-based policy to stay in public favor. 
How does this power resource work to influence decision makers?
Value-based advocacy seeks to influence the public and, thereby, public officials by finding shared values. An advocate will appeal to the values of different groups, such as equality for liberals and individual rights for conservatives (Jansson, 2018). For example, a policy advocate working to give tax breaks to green energy companies may gain value-based favor from liberals by describing the environmental benefits while reaching conservatives with job creation and reduced costs of energy. The values are different in each group, yet they amount to support for the same policy. A policy advocate appeals to the benefits that matter to different groups, promoting broad support that will influence decision-makers. 
Why is this power resource more appropriate for your approach to practice and advocacy than others? 
Value-based advocacy is similar to substantive power. It adjusts the working of a policy, or in this case, policy messaging, to solicit agreement from those who might otherwise oppose the policy (Jansson, 2018). I live in a state where there is a liberal majority, and value-based messaging is a powerful way of reaching people, as it appeals to a desire for social justice and equality. While the conservative minority is not likely to be swayed by the same message, an advocate can support the benefits that are important to those communities as well.
Describe the ethical issues or concerns in using the type of power resource you selected. 
A value-based approach appeals to the greater benefit of a policy rather than coercive, or threatening people (Jansson, 2018). It focuses on the positive attributes of the proposed change rather than relying on fear. It seeks to create community through commonality rather than dividing people. Social workers support policies that support vulnerable populations (Rocha et al., 2010). Value-based advocacy does this by demonstrating the ways that benefit everyone. An advocate will need to be careful not to adjust the messaging so much to each group that it becomes manipulative (Jansson, 2018). While the reason for backing a policy differs, and therefore, the messaging differs depending on the group for which it is aimed, the policy being described must remain transparent. An advocate cannot manipulate different groups by describing different versions of the policy or inaccurately representing what the policy does.
