ConceptThe goal of this assignment is to continue the process of developing your ability to see letter forms as shapes rather than traditional phonetic components in support of verbal communication. This will be difficult due to our prior experiences with letters being almost entirely phonetic; characters to form words, sentences and ideas. It is a way of seeing you will need to perfect so when using type in designing page layouts, those typographic areas of text and headline will become art elements along with photos and drawings in your 2-dimensional space divisions.
You will find all necessary letters to visually spell a 6 to 9 letter word of your choice, from chosen digital photographs of similar content (above samples are Misty Landscapes). Look for shape edges, overlaps, contrasting colors edge to edge and other physical relationships that imply the physical form of letters. (reference demonstration and classroom sample presentation) An uninformed observer will only see a beautiful photographic series when viewing your letter form construction. The presentation of the series of photographs side by side should then by juxtaposition only, reveal the visually hidden typographic word. You must not crop the photographs so closely that the only apparent image is the letter form itself. Each photograph in the series must be able to stand alone as a viable composition worthy of praise regardless of any relationship to a word representation. Your series will be presentedon a neutral gray background, with margins that are appropriate to image series size. (reference demonstration and classroom presentation) This process, applied properly, will be critical to your eventual use of typography as compositional elements and for the choice of appropriate type styles in Graphic Design projects.
Student Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this assignment you should be able to:
See form first not phonetic content in typographic samples
Choose appropriate font style, form, and usage in Graphic Design presentations

Chapter 2 , The Near East 9000 BC – 300 BC
This chapter covers the geographical areas of The Tigris and Euphrates rivers including ancient Turkey, Persia, Arabia ,Syria, Iraq, Iran, Azerbaijan, Israel, Jordan, and parts of southern Russia from . This period completes a transition from a nomadic way of life to a communal way of life. The five important developments to recognize during this period are:
1. The development of cities and fortified cities.
2. The proliferation of farming, agricultural irrigation and domesticated livestock. We saw the beginning of this with the later Algerian cave paintings from chapter 1. The move into the Bronze Age and the proliferation of metal tools supports this agricultural advancement.
3 Most important- The creation/invention of writing and the development of written Language to record history, stories and mythologies, religious texts and economic records. This includes Organized/ recorded religion.
4. The introduction of the notion of ” the King, or Emperor or Ruler as a deity who presiding over a community of subjects. Think Dungeons and Dragons or Game of Thrones. This notion persists from 5000 BC to 2020 AD and forward…
5. The introduction of music and sports (Ig you consider lion hunting a sport)as a form of entertainment. This implies a time for leisure, a movement away from labor for the sake of survival.
One thing to remember is that civilizations are still developing in Egypt, northwest Europe (from chapter 1), the Americas, China and South East Asia, India, Russia, Africa and so on. We can only study on geographical area at a time. From here we move on to look at Egypt.

Preliminary Proposal Assignment: Paper Topic and BibliographyDue in Class Wednes

Preliminary Proposal Assignment: Paper Topic and BibliographyDue in Class Wednesday, October 6th –
Write a two-section proposal (250-300 words) describing the topic for your final research paper on 20th century urban design. Explain the scope of the topic and what kind of evidence you will use to support your ideas. The entire proposal should fit on one page.
For your topic choose one of the following two options: a) write a proposal for a case study of a particular example of 20th century urban design, or b) write a manifesto for your own ideal for contemporary urban design, using specific historical examples and precedents in order to support your ideas. In either case, you will be expected to research relevant historical writings and scholarship on the subject.
Insert a preliminary bibliography at the end of the proposal. The bibliography should have at least six sources. These sources must be published and may not include websites. At least two sources must be articles published in academic journals. The remaining sources may be any combination of books, journal articles, newspaper articles, or exhibition catalogs as long as these are all published.
The main library catalog is here: http://library.sjsu.edu/Links to an external site.. A list of databases may be found here: https://libguides.sjsu.edu/az.phpLinks to an external site.. Remember to search for terms closely related to urban design (e.g. ‘city planning’; ‘town planning’; ‘townscape’; ‘environmental design’; ‘civic art’; ‘civic design,’ etc.)
Once you have finished the assignment, click on “Assignments” in the left-hand menu of the Canvas courses website at https://sjsu.instructure.com and then click on “Library Assignment.” On the page for this assignment, click on “Submit Assignment” on the right-hand side and then follow the instructions for uploading.
Remember:
This is a preliminary proposal and the topic will probably change as you do the research.
Use the available resources in the library, including the electronic databases of articles.
If you are not finding any sources, you may need to change your topic.

Art Assignments Over the semester you will have two creative art assignments pai

Art Assignments
Over the semester you will have two creative art assignments paired with a one-page reflection
each. Reflections should be written in MLA format with Times New Roman 12 point double
spaced font, and submitted with an image of the activity These projects have nothing to do with
artistic skill! They are exercises in learning about principles of design and foundational elements
of color and line.
Project 1 – Josef Albers Color Theory – Due October 12th 11:59PM
In class we recently discussed color when we reviewed Prebles Chapter 3. We talked about Josef
Albers, whose color theory experiments became important to how we understand relationships
between hues. For this project, you will perform one of Albers’ experiments and reflect on the
experience.
 Visit the Albers Foundation Activities link here to watch the video
 Use the instructions in the video and follow along with the instructor to complete your
assignment
 In your reflection, discuss whether you saw two different colors when performing the
experiment, why you think that might be, and why this is an important thing to try to
learn about color.
 Please submit images of your color experiments (cellphone images are fine!) along with
your 1-page reflection
Project 2 – Sol Lewitt Line Drawings
Early on in the semester we talked about Sol Lewitt and his line drawings. Lewitt’s works all
stem from sets of instructions that he made. Many of his pieces have been completed by people
other than himself, and his works are reproducible even today after his death. His instructions are
often open to interpretation depending on the person executing them. For this activity, you will
use his instructions to create your own line drawing, and you will reflect with a classmate on
how yours compares and contrasts to theirs.
 Make a drawing by following the instructions below.
o 1. Find a piece of paper and a writing utensil (or multiple, be creative if you
want!)
o 2. Draw 24 tiny circles anywhere on a piece of paper.
o 3. Connect 12 of the circles with straight lines.
o 4. Connect 12 of the circles with wavy lines.
 After completion, meet with a classmate and compare drawings
 In your reflection, discuss the differences between your drawings
o Please include the name of the classmate so that I can compare drawings and see
what you did.
 Please submit an image of your drawing (cellphone images are fine!) along with your 1-page reflection

Individual Essay: ‘Making Sense of Fashion’ After exploring a variety of theorie

Individual Essay: ‘Making Sense of Fashion’
After exploring a variety of theories, you will have developed a critical eye on the field of Fashion.
You will evidence your capacity to grasp the cultural agency of fashion representations. You will
evaluate fashion products, retail spaces and branding strategies covered in your other classes and
at current fashion news and weekly trending topics, connecting what you see with the theories and
contexts provided in this unit. At the end of the unit, you will choose one case-study and one
theoretical perspective and be able to clearly articulate the cultural implications of your examples.
In 2,000 (plus Appendix and Bibliography) words you will develop a research question on one of the
following themes. Your question must reflect your capacity to engage with the theories discussed in
class and apply them to a suitable case-study:
– Fashion values. Evaluate one of the following issues: Slow and Sustainable Fashion;
Technological Developments; the impact of Globalisation; Equality and Diversity in the Fashion
industry.
– Accessibility, exclusivity, and Luxury. Explore a question around mass production and the search
of exclusivity in luxury fashion. You may include aspects of taste, class and distinction.
– Freedom and control. Discuss notions of liberation, self-expression, conformity and belonging in
relation to fashion practices. How are concepts of identity beyond the individual reflected in the
current globalised fashion arena? Choose a case-study of a brand, a garment or fashion artefact, a retailer or a marketing strategy, or an
example from fashion media. Reflect upon the cultural relevance of your example and link it with
contemporary issues debated in class (e.g., sustainability, gender, fashion change, power). Include
relevant primary research (e.g., visual observation, material analysis). Authors discussed in class and
on the Reading List must be referenced in your essay, which should bring together a minimum of 10
good academic references from academic journals or books. These may be supplemented with reliable
websites, trade journals, newspapers and magazine references. Your essay must be underpinned by appropriate literature and secondary research, direct and indirect
quotes (using Harvard referencing) and visuals (a minimum of three images).
Your writing must be clear and include an introduction to your subject matter, a development of your
argument and a conclusion. The text must be professionally presented and formatted in clean A4 size
paper, black text and double spaced.
Format: 2000 words plus appendices – A4 double spaced, 12-point Arial. Use of images correctly
referenced and formatted is crucial. Below in the file is the topic I choose: Freedom and control – Discuss notions of liberation, self-expression, conformity and belonging in relation to fashion practices. How are concepts of identity beyond the individual reflected in the current globalised fashion arena? And the document below contains Gucci’s case study link and content. Please use the content already contained in the following document for writing. There is also a sample paper for reference below
