For this task, you will write a policy report on Brazil. A policy brief presents a concise summary of information that can help readers understand, and likely make decisions about, government policies. Policy briefs may give objective summaries of relevant research, suggest possible policy options, or go even further and argue for particular courses of action.
This report should have the following characteristics:
8-10 1-spaced pages.
The first 3-4 pages need to provide some background information on the Brazil, such as:
• GDP, GDP per capita
• Unemployment, inflation
• Financial system
• FDI/ foreign aid
• Income inequality
• Demographics
• Main industries, sector shares
• Urbanization rate
• Natural resources
• Geography
• Political variables: autocracy vs. democracy; presidential vs. parliamentary system, conflict, etc. • Energy, transportation and communication
The next 2 pages need to contain information on the macroeconomic policies followed by Brazil: monetary policy and fiscal policy. What is the interest rate in the country and how has it moved across time? Has there been a fiscal reform recently or what do we know about the fiscal policy of the country?
The next 2-3 pages need to include information on the growth trajectory of Brazil. This is, using the information that you have collected above, you need to dig deeper into the conditions that have contributed to the current context of Brazil as a country. For instance, did Brazil follow a particular growth/macroeconomic policy that contributed to the current condition of the country?
