The purpose of this paper is to integrate learning from this course and demonstrate understandings of major epistemological stances (positivism/post-positivism, constructivism and critical theory) and how they impact how practice, teaching, learning and/or research are conceptualized. Students must draw on theory to build their representation of the major features of each epistemology, carefully documenting how various writers have contributed to their thinking. Explicit connections should be made between theory, practice and experience. Analysis and critique of the implications of epistemologies on theory and practice, as well as, student’s own epistemological preferences and commitments should be included in the paper. The paper should be a minimum of 10 pages, double spaced, APA format. This paper can take many forms. Here are a few possibilities to get your imagination flowing. Write versions of the same vignette or epiphany from different epistemological stances. Use epistemological theory to analyze/deconstruct each representation. Write about a critical incident and analyze it from several epistemological positions or delve into the epistemological assumptions of those involved in the incident. Connect with theory. Create a dialogue between people about an event or topic and have them represent different epistemological stances. Write a subtext that describes the epistemological assumptions. Write a scholarly paper describing the three major epistemological stances, but use examples from life to explain the theory. (Hinchey does this in her writing.) Write a brief research proposal on the same topic from different epistemological positions imagining the differences in the research question, sources of data and data collection and analyses. Be sure to read over the “Scholarly Paper Rubric” carefully to understand the components of scholarly writing you should include in the paper. Submit the completed final paper to this assignment submission folder.
