Write an analytical and interpretive paper focusing on the themes or characters of one of the first four films we have watched: The Bourne Identity, Cast Away, Get Out, or Us.  This is not a summary of the film or a retelling of what happened. The focus is on understanding the film by approaching it through specific themes and characters.  You should develop a clear topic that you can state in your introduction.  Develop some strong points that you would like to discuss as a way to analyze the film.  A good general rule is to have three clear points that are related to your main topic.

While characters and themes will extend all the way through the film, you should also focus on specific scenes or moments in the film as a way to bring details, concrete ideas, and specificity to your writing and analysis. You may use still images from the film. You must use examples of specific scenes or events in the film you choose to work on.

You may choose one of the following topics or create your own.  Write on one film.  Do not try to combine all the topics.  If you are unsure about a topic or feel stuck, you should come by my office or contact me by email. Ill be happy to help you figure something out..  Do not plagiarize, copy and paste, or use other peoples ideas without proper citation. 1. It seems that while Jordan Peele may be trying to say something about society in Us, what exactly he is saying is not clear. Explain the social analysis in the film.

2. The idea of the double or dppelganger suggests all kinds of ideas about what our doubles are up to and what they represent. Explore the idea of the doppelganger in relation to Us and possible related themes and ideas. This idea can relate to various ways of understanding the film such as: ego and id, privileged class and underclass, haves and have nots, and so on.

3. Us is a film with many allusions in names and references to other horror films. There also seems to a lot of symbolic or metaphorical material (rabbits, scissors). Explain some of these ideas and what they mean or how they work in the film.
