This assignment is designed to familiarize you with ways in which you can critically view movies, television, theater, and other forms of entertainment that we encounter on a daily basis. For this assignment you will need to view the film that you choose and complete the writing assignment.
Assignment – Journal Article: For this assignment you are to write a review of the film for the Journal of Film History. This review should provide a short synopsis and analysis of the film. You should write the article as if the film has just been released. For example, if the film was released in 1942, then you write the review as if you are living in 1942. This is designed to get you to think historically. How would viewers at the time of the release have received the film? What other things were going on in the world when this film came out? How would this have influenced the way the film was both produced and how audiences may have reacted to it? Is this film trying to address an issue or event that was happening at the time the film was made? If so, how do the actors, writers, directors, and producers get their point across? You also want to address the period in which the film was portrayed. If the film is about the Seven Years’ War, then how accurate is the portrayal? Is the storyline true to the actual historical events, or do the writers just use the event to drive the plot?
