The Assignment
For this discussion board you will explore the many purposes, methods and uses of observation and assessment. Your DB has several components.
*Watch the video titled “Observing Young Children” and “Classroom Observation Techniques.” Listen to the administrators and teachers as they discuss the importance of observation as an assessment tool.
^After watching the 2 video discuss your findings, in a summary paragraph, with your classmates by addressing the following questions: (minimum of 5 sentences)
Why is it important for teachers to understand the importance of observation in relationship to assessments?
How should a teacher use observations?
What are types of observation assessments?
*During the video, 3 specific scenarios are discussed about Joey, Marissa and Salvatore. In addition to the summary paragraph, choose one of the children to discuss. For this part of your discussion the following 3 areas must be addressed:
What was the issue/concern with the child? (include which child you chose)
How did the teacher use observation as an assessment tool and what was she looking for?
How did using observation improve the child’s skills? what were the results?
after answer the questions reply to two other people on agree or disagree and why.
First person reply to:Good afternoon, class!
Observation in relationship to assessments is important for teachers or those in an educational setting because it can help identify a child’s strength and weaknesses both in education, learning, and a social environment. In addition, it can help the teachers or learning facility know where, if need be, improvements need to be made in the curriculum. One example in the video that I noticed that Patricia Gardner used was asking questions such as “are you okay?” while the children were playing. This opened a line of communication for the young children and provided them with the opportunity to express their feelings. In addition, documentation such as note taking and photographs, if need be, can also be very helpful in an assessment.
The child that I chose was Joey, because when I was a child, I was much like him. I mainly excelled in activities that involved being by myself, and I preferred it that way in comparison to having social interaction. The teachers noticed that Joey was partial to the computer. In order to assess his social skills, they would set up situations in which Joey could use the computer but there would always be a child present. This had a positive effect on Joey because he started to interact with the children in more settings other then what was in his comfort zone.

It is important for teachers to understand the importance of observation in a relationship to assessments because, it will help them be more prepared and reach goals that are both challenging and achievable. It helps the teacher learn more about the child. It also helps the parents see what their child is doing in class. The way observations should be used by teachers is watching the child closely, and pre-planning assessments. There are a few types of observation assessments. There are planned observations, systematic observation, anecdotal records, and participant observation.
The child I chose to observe was Joey. Joey had issues with social interacting. The way the teacher used observation was by putting another student with him at the computer. She was looking for ways to improve joey’s social interaction. Using observation improved the child’s skill by helping him become more social. When the teacher put more children with joey at the computer he became more social with them.
