Exercise 2 Maya Art and Writing (10 points max): Completion of this exercise will help students experience how archaeologists use artifacts, art, and writing to increase our understanding of Maya civilization. This exercise contains two parts:
Part 1. Read Pitts, M (2008) Writing in Maya Glyphs Names, Places, & Simple Sentences. A Non-Technical Introduction to Maya Glyphs. Book 1 (posted in Bb). Then, use the glyphs from the syllabary to replace the English syllables in your own name.
Part 2. Using the Internet visit the following website http://www.famsi.org/research/kerr/. Click on Maya Vase Database and select a keyword from the list to retrieve the image of a vessel that contains both glyphs and iconography in its decoration. Make a list of both glyphs and iconography in the picture and take note of any information contained in the vessel decor about the Maya life and environment. Then, answer the following questions: a. What kinds of clothes are depicted? What does their style of dress tell you about their environment? b. Does the picture tell you anything about the natural environment? Do you see any of the plants or animals that might have been important to the Maya? c. List or draw pictures of five artifacts that you see in the picture. (Artifacts are things that were used or made by people and might include pots shown in the picture, spears, bracelets, necklaces, headdresses, etc.).
Write a report containing responses for both parts.
