Dominant versus Recessive Alleles<
<
You have begun work at a new startup company that is going to try to breed strawberries with colors other than red. This job involves tracking plant matings and the resulting offspring – therefore you are constantly thinking about Mendel! During one week of work you have analyzed a couple datasets in which variation at a single gene was being studied:<
<
1. A red strawberry mated to a purple strawberry produced all red offspring.<
2. A red strawberry mated to a white strawberry produced all pink offspring. When these pink strawberries mated with each other a mixture of red strawberries, white strawberries, and pink strawberries were produced.<
Your supervisor wants you to summarize what is happening at a molecular genetic level that could produce such interesting inheritance patterns. Use your understanding of molecular biology to explain how dominant and recessive alleles are expressed through transcription and translation, and that they may have functional gene products. Describe how the interaction of the products produced by each allele results in what we see as dominant or recessive traits. Also, explain the difference between incomplete and co-dominance to your supervisor and indicate which of those terms applies to the pink strawberries in experiment two.<
Your summary should be typed in Times New Roman 12-pt font and be one-and-a-half-spaced with 1” margins. It should be a minimum of 1 page and maximum of 2 pages. The header block does not count towards the page limit. You must upload a .docx, .pdf or .gdoc document. Contact your TA for permission, if you plan to use any other format (e.g., Apple Pages).<
