In your response – I expect you to go beyond a superficial response. What is your role as a CHW in responding to the scenario? Are you acting as an advocate, educator, health educator, health care deliverer? What are the professional expectations of you in this role? After considering these questions, what is your plan of action, in response to your scenario?
Scenario 1: Mrs Apple
Mrs. Apple is a 72 year-old female who lives alone. She uses a cane to get around, but has fallen several times in the last month. This past week, the Meals-On-Wheels (who stop by daily) found her on the kitchen floor, unable to get up. She was transported via ambulance to Sunshine Hospital, and treated/released with a sprained ankle. Her hospital notes indicate that she is high mental acuity and her bone density tests are within the normal range. Mrs. Apple insists that she had a “silly slip” and she blames the cane for slipping under her.
• What information would you gather when you visited Mrs. Apple? • What would be the next steps in assisting Mrs. Apple?
