The purpose of this assignment is to give you practice in the analysis and interpretation of classroom talk, and to provide an opportunity to reflect on the methodological issues involved, and the purposes which can be served by such an analysis.
1. You should identify an audio or video recording of classroom talk from a language classroom (or English medium instruction class) of any type which interests you. The recording may involve whole class or small group work; it may involve teacher-student or student-student interaction.
2. Transcribe about 5 continuous minutes of this recording, using any appropriate transcription conventions consistently to bring out points of interest in the spoken language. Make a formal ‘key’ to show the conventions you are using. You should attempt to transcribe 5 continuous and uninterrupted minutes with no breaks.
3. Identify one or more issues of concern, regarding the apparent effectiveness of your chosen extract as a teaching/ learning experience. (support this with some relevant reading.)
4. Propose some possible ways of analysing the transcript you have made, in order to shed further light on the issue(s) identified; conduct a trial analysis.
(Your analysis may be quantitative and/or qualitative; you may, for example, wish to analyse features such as who takes turns when, and how often; the nature of questions, and who asks them; the relation between questions and answers; how changes of ‘topic’ are negotiated; whether and how errors are corrected, or misunderstandings are repaired; whether there is any evidence of growth in learners’ language and/or understanding.)
5. Write a brief report on your investigation, including a description and evaluation of the analysis procedures.
