common injuries of the Leg, Knee, Ankle, and Foot

Discuss common injuries of the Leg, Knee, Ankle, and Foot. List the body part, then name and describe (what part of the body is injured) at least ONE injury for each and HOW it occurs (10pts per body part and injury). You may identify more than one injury for each if you wish. 😉

Example:

Ankle: (body part) Ankle sprain (NAME of injury).  A sprain occurs when the ankle is forced to move out of its normal position causing one or more of the ankle’s ligaments to stretch, partially tear or tear completely (what body PART is injured). Injury can occur when participating in sports, walking on uneven surfaces, or even wearing inappropriate footwear (cause or HOW injury occurs).

NOTE: Please DEFINE the body part if your source calls it by the scientific name. For example, the plantar fascia is a band of tissue along the bottom of your foot that connects your heel bone to your toes. Another example, the malleoli are the a bony projections on either side of the ankle, and the medial malleolus is the bump that protrudes on the inner side of your ankle.  If you have any questions, PLEASE CONTACT your instructor.

Leg: Tibia (Shinbone) Shaft Fractures. A tibial shaft fracture usually causes immediate, severe pain. Other symptoms may include: Inability to walk or bear weight on the leg, Deformity or instability of the leg, Bone “tenting” over the skin at the fracture site, or bone protruding through a break in the skin, Occasional loss of feeling in the foot. Tibial shaft fractures are often caused by high-energy collisions, such as a motor vehicle or motorcycle crashes. The bone can break into several pieces (comminuted fractures). Sports injuries, such as a fall while skiing or a collision with another player during soccer, are low-energy injuries resulting in tibial shaft fractures. These fractures are usually caused by twisting forces resulting in oblique or spiral fractures.

Knee: Patellar fracture. The most common symptoms of a patellar fracture are pain and swelling in the front of the knee. Other symptoms may include Bruising, Inability to straighten the knee or keep it extended in a straight leg raise, Inability to walk. Patellar fractures are most often caused by: Falling directly onto the knee, Receiving a sharp blow to the knee, such as might occur during a head-on vehicle collision if your kneecap is driven into the dashboard. The patella can also be fractured indirectly. For example, a sudden contraction of the quadriceps muscle in the knee can pull apart the patella.

Ankle: Ankle fracture. Because a severe ankle sprain can feel the same as a broken ankle, every ankle injury should be evaluated by a physician. Common symptoms for a fractured ankle include Immediate and severe pain, Swelling, Bruising, Tender to touch, Cannot put any weight on the injured foot, Deformity (“out of place”), particularly if the ankle joint is dislocated as well. Cause: Twisting or rotating your ankle, Rolling your ankle, tripping or falling, Impact during a car accident.

Ankle: Talus fracture. Patients with talus fractures usually experience- Acute pain, Inability to walk or bear weight on foot, Considerable swelling, bruising, and tenderness. Most talus fractures result from high-energy trauma such as a car collision or a fall from height. Injuries from sports, particularly snowboarding, are another, though less common, cause of talus injuries.
