There are four types of situations that often occur in typical business cases. These are situations that are Problems, Decisions, require Evaluations, or focused on Rules. These four do not cover every situation and you may develop competencies for your own as you develop in case analysis. Problem situations in case analysis requires the accurate identification of the problem. In this activity you will look at the National Stockpile Case from the perspective of a Problem Case analysis to complete your assignment. To complete the assignment you are required to submit a 1-2 page typed, Times New Roman font, 12 pt., with references case analysis as an outline only. We would like to see your answers for the entire case analysis process. Remember the process has five phases: 1.Situation – Start by asking yourself what is the situation and developing questions about information you need to answer the questions. You can often do this by simply reading the first and last sections of the case. You are looking to define what type of “situation” the case is. These are Problems, Decisions, Evaluations, and Rule situations. 2.Questions – You will develop questions to be answered automatically depending on the type of case. Do you need to know the problem? Do you need to know the decisions? Is there an evaluation requirement? This is your “first pass” through the reading and you should conduct it by scanning through the headings of the text. 3.Hypothesis – This is the most important part of the case analysis process to develop accurately. Make sure you know the problem, decision, etc. Look for causes and note the causes you are most certain about. Decide what quantitative or qualitative evidence is relevant. Many cases have irrelevant material. Decide if others in the case are causes of the problem, decision, etc. If you have time, put the case away for a bit after this review and take a break. 4.Proof and Action – In this phase, look for proof and action to support your hypothesis. What in the case material supports your hypothesis? In college level writing this is sometimes called taking a position or making an argument. You are looking for specific facts to support your argument. You are taking a well-reviewed position. 5.Alternatives – In this final phase, you should again question your hypothesis. You are specifically looking for weaknesses in your argument or hypothesis. Take a look at the alternatives and compare which is the strongest alternative. Ask yourself if there is a better hypothesis. In future cases, we will evaluate from the three other situational perspectives – Decision, Evaluation, and Rules. Decision situations in case analysis identification of the explicit decision regardless of pressures and stress to make the decision. Also, no matter the decision, analyzing it properly requires decision options, decision criteria, and relevant evidence. Evaluation situations require evaluation of an act or effort in the case. Like decision situations, evaluations require criteria and evidence. Rules situations require analysis in a specific functional area and provoke strong differences of opinion in their analysis.
