Step-by-Step Guide for DNP Scholars

Step 1: Select an Appropriate Peer-Reviewed Article
Search reputable academic databases such as CINAHL or PubMed. Choose a study published within the last five years that aligns with nursing practice, healthcare outcomes, or clinical leadership. Confirm the article includes a DOI.

Step 2: Read the Article Critically (Not Passively)
Read the article multiple times. Focus on the abstract, purpose statement, methodology, results, and discussion sections. Take notes in your own words to maintain originality and avoid plagiarism.

Step 3: Write a Strong Introduction
Introduce the topic broadly, then narrow it to the selected study. Identify the article title, authors, year of publication, and why the study is relevant to nursing practice or DNP scholarship.

Step 4: Explain the Purpose of the Study
Clearly describe why the study was conducted. Identify the research problem or gap in practice the authors aimed to address. This section should demonstrate your understanding, not quote the article directly.

Step 5: Analyze the Research Methodology
Identify whether the study uses:

  • Quantitative

  • Qualitative

  • Mixed methods

Explain why this methodology was appropriate for the research question. Discuss study design, sample size, data collection, and analysis in scholarly language.

Step 6: Discuss the Results and Their Contribution
Summarize the key findings and explain how the results answer the research question. Connect outcomes to nursing practice, policy, or patient care improvements where appropriate.

Step 7: Integrate Scholarly Sources
Support your analysis using at least two recent peer-reviewed sources. Paraphrase carefully and cite in APA 7th edition format, including DOIs.

Step 8: Maintain Academic Integrity
Avoid copying phrases from the article. Write in your own scholarly voice, use proper citations, and run plagiarism checks before submission to stay under the 10% threshold.

Step 9: Apply Proper APA Formatting
Include:

  • Title page with header

  • Page numbers

  • Double-spacing throughout

  • APA-formatted reference page

Step 10: Proofread and Edit
Review for clarity, grammar, logical flow, and alignment with assignment instructions. Academic writing should be concise, objective, and professional.
