However, despite strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), several persistent barriers have slowed the full integration and utilization of APN roles. Three major barriers include restrictive scope-of-practice regulations, lack of role clarity and professional resistance, and limited institutional and organizational support. Addressing these challenges is essential to advancing the profession and optimizing healthcare delivery.

One major barrier to the progress of advanced practice nursing is restrictive scope-of-practice regulations. In many states and healthcare systems, APRNs are limited by laws that require physician supervision or collaboration, even when evidence demonstrates that APRNs can practice safely and independently. According to Saunders (2014), these regulatory constraints are often politically driven rather than evidence-based, creating unnecessary limitations on APRN autonomy.
