Discussion Post – Climate Change Effects and Mitigation

One major effect of climate change is the increase in extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, floods, and heatwaves. These events not only damage infrastructure and property but also pose serious risks to human health, including heat-related illnesses, respiratory issues from poor air quality, and increased mental health stressors (IPCC, 2023). To mitigate this concern, I can take personal and community-level actions, such as reducing energy consumption by using public transportation or renewable energy sources, supporting local climate-resilient infrastructure projects, and participating in community emergency preparedness initiatives.

Another concern is rising global temperatures and sea levels, which threaten coastal communities and can disrupt local ecosystems. This contributes to increased flooding, displacement of populations, and loss of biodiversity (NASA, 2022). To address this, I can advocate for sustainable policies, reduce personal carbon emissions through diet and lifestyle changes, and participate in local tree-planting or conservation programs. On a broader scale, supporting legislation that promotes renewable energy and sustainable urban planning helps mitigate the long-term impacts of climate change.

By taking individual and community actions, and advocating for systemic change, we can contribute to reducing the risks associated with climate change and promote environmental and public health.

Step-by-Step Guide for Posting and Responding

Step 1: Post Your Initial Response

  • Clearly identify at least two climate change effects or concerns.

  • Include specific actions you could take personally or within your community.

  • Use credible sources and SWS-style references.

Step 2: Respond to Classmates

  • Read at least one classmate’s post.

  • Acknowledge their points and expand the discussion:

    • “I agree with your point about rising temperatures and would add…”

    • “Another strategy that could help mitigate this concern is…”

  • Be respectful and professional, encouraging further dialogue.

Step 3: Proofread

  • Check grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Ensure clarity, conciseness, and adherence to word count (usually 150–200 words for initial post).
