Little-Known Sexually Transmitted Infections: Understanding Rare STDs and Their Impact

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)

Instructions

1. Review the module presentation and the recommended and additional resources.

2. This assignment focuses on sexually transmitted diseases or infections (STDs/STIs) that are little known or talked about.

3. You should look up information on STDs/STIs and select a specific infection that you have not heard of before. If you are well oriented on the topic, then choose an infection that you understand is not well known to the general population and should be publicized. Any infection or disease that can be transmitted through sexual contact can be used (Example: Neurosyphilis).

4. Mention the selected infection, provide a brief summary of what it is, symptoms and consequences. Elaborate on other additional information (such as infection statistics, prevalence, whether it is common in your country of residence, who it affects most, or any other scientific information you discover in your search that you feel is relevant).

5. Conclude with your reaction to this information discovered and why you believe you were unaware of this infection. Reflect on the quality of sex education you received about STDs/STIs.

Remember to review the  academic expectations  for your submission.

Step 1: Choose a Rare or Under-discussed STD/STI
Think beyond common infections like HIV, Chlamydia, or Gonorrhea. Some lesser-known but significant examples include:

  • Mycoplasma genitalium

  • Trichomoniasis

  • Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)

  • Chancroid

  • Neurosyphilis
Pick one that you personally haven’t learned about in sex education or that you believe most people are unaware of.

Step 2: Structure Your Discussion Post in 4 Clear Parts

  1. Introduction and Identification of the STI

    • Introduce the infection.

    • Explain why it caught your attention or why it’s rarely discussed.

  2. Summary of Infection

    • What is it?

    • What are the symptoms and potential complications if left untreated?

    • How is it transmitted?

  3. Scientific and Social Data

    • Global or national prevalence.

    • Demographics most affected.

    • Diagnostic or treatment challenges.

    • Is it common in your region/country?

  4. Personal Reaction and Reflection

    • Why were you unaware of this infection?

    • What does this say about your past sex education?

    • Why is public awareness of this STI important?

Step 3: Cite Academic Sources
Use at least two scholarly sources (from journals, textbooks, CDC, WHO, or peer-reviewed sites).

Recommended Links for Research:

Step 4: Follow APA Style Guidelines

  • In-text citations should include the author and year.

  • Include a reference list at the end in APA 7 format.

  • Use professional language, correct grammar, and punctuation.

Step 5: Respond to Peers Thoughtfully
When replying to classmates:

  • Ask questions that prompt deeper thinking (e.g., “Do you think this infection should be included in public school sex education?”)

  • Offer additional facts or a contrasting viewpoint from your own research.

Final Tip:
Keep your tone informative yet reflective—you’re not just presenting research but also evaluating your own awareness and knowledge gaps. This shows both academic insight and personal growth.
