Disaster Preparedness in Community Health

Find something that interests you from each of the four chapters (use PowerPoints or textbook). Post a brief share from each chapter that will add to your classmates’ understanding, insight, or future nursing practice. Your post should look approximately like this:

Chapter 30: Here is an experience I’ve had with [insert topic here]. Followed by a few supporting sentences that illustrate your experience.

Chapter 31: I was curious about [insert topic here]. I found this short video on YouTube that talks about [very brief summary]. Insert hyperlink here.

Chapter 32: This is something in my community that I would (or have) recommended as a resource. They do X, Y, Z. Insert hyperlink here.

Chapter 33: I researched this [insert job description]. Here’s what I found about the required education, job opportunities, and potential wages.

*The examples above are NOT prescriptive and can be used in any order if you choose these prompts. These are just some formats that I think might be interesting. Please choose whatever catches your interest and write up a little something about it for the sake of discussion. You will write one post with a few sentences of information about each of the four chapters, respond to one post with substance (“that’s cool!” is not substance), and read at least 10 posts, which I can track through D2L so you do not have to manufacture proof of how many you’ve read

Chapter 30: Disaster Preparedness in Community Health

Here is an experience I’ve had with disaster preparedness drills at my hospital. A few months ago, I participated in a simulation for a mass casualty event involving a chemical spill. We worked alongside EMTs, public health officials, and hospital staff to triage patients. What struck me most was how essential interdisciplinary coordination and clear communication protocols were. I realized that even with solid medical training, without planning and teamwork, chaos could override care delivery. This helped me appreciate the need for nurses to stay involved in emergency preparedness not only in hospitals but also in community settings.

Chapter 31: School Health Nursing

I was curious about the role of school nurses, especially regarding mental health in youth. I found this short YouTube video by the National Association of School Nurses that explains how school nurses are often the first line of defense in identifying mental health needs, offering support, and referring students to care. It also covers how they help manage chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes during school hours.

Chapter 32: Community Resources for Health Promotion

This is something in my community that I have recommended before: the Free Clinic of Central Virginia. They provide free primary care, mental health counseling, and prescription assistance for uninsured or underinsured residents. I volunteered there briefly and was impressed by their wraparound services and the compassion of the staff. It’s an incredible example of what community-centered care can look like.

Chapter 33: Occupational Health Nurse

I researched this career path and found that occupational health nurses typically need at least a BSN, though a Master’s degree can open leadership roles. Certification is available through the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses (ABOHN). These nurses work in corporate, industrial, and government settings, focusing on employee safety, injury prevention, and health promotion. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary is around $80,000–$100,000, depending on location and experience. Job outlook is strong due to increasing employer focus on workplace wellness.
