Ethical behavior is a foundational expectation in both nursing education and practice. Unethical conduct in a nursing Master’s program, such as plagiarism, can have serious academic and professional consequences. Plagiarism—using someone else’s work or ideas without proper citation—is considered academic dishonesty and a violation of integrity policies in most academic institutions. A nursing graduate student who plagiarizes may face disciplinary action ranging from a failing grade to dismissal from the program (Silva et al., 2018). For example, a student submitting a literature review copied from an online source without attribution not only jeopardizes their academic standing but also undermines their credibility and readiness for ethical practice.

In the clinical setting, unethical behavior such as falsifying patient records is equally, if not more, damaging. A nurse who documents vital signs or assessments that were never performed breaches legal and professional standards. This can compromise patient safety, lead to license suspension or revocation, and expose the nurse and institution to legal liability (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2015). For instance, if a nurse records that a post-operative patient was assessed hourly, when in fact no assessment occurred, this could result in undetected complications and serious harm to the patient.

Both settings emphasize the importance of honesty, accountability, and professional integrity. Ethical lapses not only damage individual reputations but also erode public trust in the nursing profession. Therefore, maintaining ethical standards in both education and practice is essential to ensure safe, competent, and trustworthy care.
