Practicum/Field Experience Reflection

During my recent practicum, I was fortunate to participate in a variety of teaching activities, including co-teaching a lesson on alternate methods of teaching and observing a parent-teacher conference. One of the highlights of my experience was presenting a lesson that involved technology to make learning easier for students to engage inand to progress in their understanding of concepts.

I focused on exposing students to digital citizenship within the lesson. I used interactive activities and online resources to help the students acquire knowledge on the importance of practicing responsible behavior while using digital technologies. To improve the lesson, I used the “3 Ways to Weave Digital Citizenship into Your Curriculum” strategy (Krueger, 2020), which involved the utilization of real-life examples. I welcomed students to share their opinions about online etiquette, safety, and the implications of their online activities. The subject was explained in a way that made the concept seem relevant to their own lives, and they responded positively to the lesson being interactive.

In order to engage the students, I used alternate teaching stylessuch as group work, discussion, and using technology-based activities. For example, I required students to use an online quiz program to assess their familiarity with the content. This allowed me to monitor their progress in real time and adapt the lesson accordingly. Students seemed to find the gamification aspect of the lesson engaging, and I found that their participation levels were elevated compared to usual, especially when they were collaborating in small groups.

The lesson taught me the importance of digital citizenship and how it applies to the contemporary classroom. Through connecting the concept of digital citizenship to real-life examples, I was able to connect better with the students, ensuring they understood the application of the topic. It also offered the chance to develop strategies for connecting various learners, as outlined by the teaching preparation standards for promoting student engagement and responding to their diverse needs.

The next parent-teacher conference proved to be as useful. I was able to see firsthand how teacher-parent contact can impact students’ achievement. I saw the ways in which teachers used specific strategies to engage parents in learning with their child and offer help for areas where improvement was needed. This exercise highlighted the importance of establishing useful home-school partnerships and parents being well-informed partners in education for their children.

Overall, my field practicum experience allowed me to discover more about effective teaching techniques and the importance of engaging students in meaningful learning. It also highlighted the important role that technology now plays within education, along with the importance of teachers capacity to continue adapting to suit their learners’ needs.
