Struggling with where to start this assignment? Follow this guide to tackle your assignment easily!

Step 1: Understand the Assignment Requirements

The first step in tackling this assignment is to understand the overall task. You need to create a 6-12 slide PowerPoint presentation on a special population group and their healthcare needs. This will be accompanied by a 5-10 minute recording of you presenting your PowerPoint. The aim is to enhance your understanding of the healthcare needs of special populations, and to help you develop skills in delivering culturally competent care.

You need to choose one of the following special populations:

  • LGBTQ+
  • Homeless or housing insecure individuals
  • Incarcerated individuals
  • Disabled veterans
  • Racial and/or cultural minorities

Your presentation should cover the following elements:

  • Introduction to the special population
  • Cultural values and beliefs relevant to healthcare
  • Healthcare disparities faced by the population
  • Strategies for culturally competent care
  • Case studies or personal narratives
  • Resources for further learning
  • An APA reference slide

Step 2: Choose Your Special Population

Before you begin your research and PowerPoint creation, choose which special population you want to focus on. Pick one you feel most passionate about or curious about. This will help you engage with the topic and create a more compelling presentation.

Step 3: Research Your Chosen Special Population

Once you have your special population, it’s time to conduct thorough research. Gather information on:

  • Cultural values and beliefs: What are the key values of this population group that affect their healthcare? For example, if you choose LGBTQ+ individuals, cultural values might include gender identity, sexual orientation, and their experience of discrimination in healthcare settings.
  • Healthcare disparities: What healthcare challenges does this group face? Consider access to care, discrimination, health outcomes, and health literacy. For example, homeless individuals might struggle with access to healthcare and may have high rates of mental health issues.
  • Culturally competent care strategies: What strategies can healthcare providers use to ensure culturally competent care? These strategies should be practical and tailored to the specific needs of the population group you’re studying.
  • Case studies or personal narratives: Look for real-life examples or stories that illustrate the struggles or healthcare successes of this group.
  • Resources: Identify credible resources where others can learn more about providing culturally sensitive care for this group.

Remember, your research should come from scholarly or professional best-practice sources, especially ones from the last five years. Use databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, or your school’s library resources.

Step 4: Create Your PowerPoint Slides

Your PowerPoint should be 6-12 slides in length. Here’s a suggested breakdown:

  1. Title Slide (1 slide)

    • Include the presentation title, your name, and the course information.
  2. Introduction Slide (1 slide)

    • Provide a brief introduction to the chosen special population (e.g., LGBTQ+ individuals, homeless individuals).
    • Include some statistics or background information.
  3. Cultural Values and Beliefs (1-2 slides)

    • Outline the cultural values and beliefs relevant to healthcare for this group.
    • Use bullet points or visuals to illustrate your points.
  4. Healthcare Disparities (1-2 slides)

    • Highlight the healthcare challenges or disparities faced by the population.
    • Use data and examples to support your points.
  5. Culturally Competent Care Strategies (1-2 slides)

    • Present specific strategies that healthcare providers can use to provide culturally sensitive care.
    • Include case studies or personal narratives if available.
  6. Resources for Further Learning (1 slide)

    • Provide links or references to further readings or resources that healthcare professionals can use to improve their understanding of the population.
  7. Reference Slide (1 slide)

    • List all the scholarly sources you cited in APA format. Ensure your sources are reliable, professional, and recent (within the last 5 years).

Step 5: Write Speaker’s Notes

For each slide, you should include speaker’s notes that explain what you will say while presenting the slide. The speaker’s notes will guide you when recording your presentation. Make sure to:

  • Write in complete sentences.
  • Be clear and concise.
  • Avoid overloading the slide with text—use bullet points for key ideas, and explain them verbally in the speaker’s notes.

Step 6: Record Your Presentation

Now it’s time to record your presentation using Kaltura (or any other approved recording software). Your presentation should be 5-10 minutes in length.

  • Practice beforehand to ensure you stay within the time frame.
  • Speak clearly and confidently, and keep your presentation engaging.
  • Use your speaker’s notes to help you remember your key points while presenting.

Step 7: Review and Edit

After recording, watch your presentation to make sure:

  • You didn’t exceed the time limit.
  • You covered all required elements of the presentation.
  • Your speaking is clear and professional.
  • The slides are visually engaging and aligned with your spoken words.

If necessary, make edits to improve the flow, timing, or content.

Step 8: Submit Your Presentation

After reviewing, finalize your PowerPoint slides, speaker’s notes, and recorded presentation. Ensure that your PowerPoint is well-organized, your references are formatted in APA style, and your speaker’s notes are clear.

Once you’re satisfied with everything, submit your presentation according to the course guidelines.

By following these steps, you will be able to create a well-researched, engaging, and culturally competent presentation that meets the requirements of the assignment. Good luck!
