Describe why you have selected nursing as a career. How do your personal nursing career goals align with the school Mission and Values?
My answer- I was born and partly raised in west Africa Liberia. When the war started my family fled to the US in hopes for a better life. As a young woman I have always aspired to be in a position to help and care for people which lead my passion more towards a career in the medical field. I have been in the health field for many years. During High school I had my mind set on pursuing a career in medicine, but tragedy strike our family when my father the sole braid winner of our family was brutally murder Infront of me at the tender age of 16 years old in our family business. This set me on a path of confusion, hurt and brokenness for about 10 years. I couldn’t understand why another human could want to take an honest, good and hardworking family man’s life. While dealing with that I some how found myself in an abusive relationship at a young age but as God could have it I some up the courage to walk away from that relationship without being badly harm. Now that my father was no more I had to step up as the oldest child to help my mom care for my youngest sibling this lead me to working multiple jobs and doing my best to help be there for my family. I some how put my dreams aside taking parttime classes but barely making it through as I had so many other things impacting me at home. My mother is such an amazing woman to rise and stay strong for her family. She is part of the reason I’m still standing. A strong advocate for education and an amazing mother and friend to her kids. She really stood strong worked hard and provided for her children. As I got older, I made the decision to focus on my dreams and pursue my passion for medicine. I am more focus now, happily married with two beautiful stepchildren. With the strong support of my husband, I was encouraged to further my studies in nursing. The school mission and values align with mine because the school educate women to lead and influence. The school educate at all degree levels through valuing and integrating the liberal arts and professional education within the Catholic intellectual tradition, emphasizing scholarly inquiry and social justice teaching as lived by the Sisters of Saint schools. The welcome a rich diversity of students, with a baccalaureate college for women at the heart of the University and graduate and adult colleges for women and men. Committed to excellence and opportunity, the school develops leaders who act with integrity. I hope to be a managing director of the hospital I work at now one day and also travel back to Liberia to establish a small orphanage for kids who are in need of a safe place.
