For this assignment, you will write a letter of intent for a grant. A letter of intent is sent out to grant institutions to notify them of your interest in doing a particular kind of project and to determine their interest in funding your work. In science, education, and even in some businesses, letters of intent and grants are a means of professional survival and growth.
This grant is being offered through the American Chemical Society (ACS), and its purpose is to educate others on a compound. For the letter of intent, in at least 750-words you must:
1. Pick a compound in the field of nutrition.
2. Introduce this compound and let the committee know about the compound and why it is important to learn about it.
3. Write a logical, persuasive argument that will gain the reader’s interest and demonstrate how this will fill a void in an area that is lacking information.
Be sure you include the following: • Name of the compound you are interested in. Some common examples you may already know are NaCl (table salt), or CaCO3 (the active ingredient in TUMS). These examples are not eligible for use in this paper.
• Identify the field of study you are focusing on with this compound.
• List the elements that are in the compound.
• Provide some characteristics of the compound, such as boiling point, state of matter, density.
• Describe why this compound is important to learn about.
• Explain why this field of study is being chosen as the focus.
• Outline what you hope the audience will gain from learning about this compound.
The letter of inquiry should be persuasive yet brief. Avoid any jargon that may bog down the reader of the letter. The content should be as follows:
Please use the following subheadings in the paper.
o Opening Introduction: Introduce yourself and your idea of creating an educational narrative presentation on the compound you are interested in and the field of study that you will focus on with this compound.
o Statement of need: Discuss why the compound is important to learn about and why that field of study is being chosen as the focus.
o Project Activity: Sell yourself and your compound. Explain why your compound and approach is the way to go and should be looked at.
o Outcomes: Discuss what you hope the audience will gain from learning about this compound.
o Closing/Conclusion: Summarize your content and ask to submit a full proposal.
Note: For the purposes of this assignment you are not creating a complete letter of Intent but some of the basics of a letter of intent for a grant.
