1) Identify the gender roles of the major characters and how they are constructed and maintained.
Specifically, your analysis should answer the following questions: how are the male and female characters portrayed? Do they adhere to the traditional roles of masculinity and femininity or are they more “progressive” characters? How, if at all, do male characters not adhering to traditional gender roles maintain their masculinity? How, if at all, do female characters not adhering to traditional gender roles maintain their femininity? If children are present, are they being socialized into traditional gender roles? What symbolic interaction occurred to lead you to your conclusions? Hint: on family-oriented situation comedies, ask yourself who is responsible for preparing meals, taking care of children, earning wages, etc. Also pay attention to the types of dialogue that take place between characters.
