Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”, is the process of drilling and injecting fluid into the ground at a high pressure in order to fracture shale rocks to release natural gas inside. In 2000, shale beds provided just 1 percent of America’s natural gas supply. Today, nationally, fracking produces two-thirds (67 percent) of the natural gas in the United States, according to the US Energy Information Administration, and 50% the nation’s oil.
But are the environmental costs too steep?
