You will be asked to complete an assignment requesting the following 5 elements:
1. Your topic/Research Question
2. Your search terms
3. 3 sources in ASA or APA format.
4. How each source relates to your research question/topic
5. Author Affiliations for each proposed source.
N.B. You do not include your annotations in this assignment. If you do so, these extra pieces will not be read or graded.
1. Your research topic may be phrased as a research question.
An example research topic: Mothering and the economic position of women.
The same idea as a research question: How does mothering affect the economic position of women? If so, how?
2. You may use as many search terms as you like.
Using sociology as a search term can help narrow the results to sociological periodicals.
consider using key terms found in the textbook that are related to your topic.
If you are struggling to identify search terms, consider looking up your topic in a sociological dictionary or sociology encyclopedia. A dictionary and encyclopedia of sociology can be found near the bottom of this page or in the HM section of the library stacks: https://guides.rdpolytech.ca/sociology
3. You may use any database that you like, however, I recommend the Soci-Index database as a starting place. It can be located here: https://guides.rdpolytech.ca/sociology
4. When choosing the 3 sources be mindful that these are the 3 sources that are to be used in the annotation assignment in the later assessment and in your video presentation. The sources must be sociological. I recommend doing a search for a 4th source, for a literature review of your topic (to aid in the video/speaker note section of this course).
5. Author affiliations can be found on the abstract page as well as within the journal article itself, typically. They are often on the first or last page. Author affiliations can also be found by google searching each of the authors.
Students will be required to annotate each source, draw connections among the articles and connections between the articles and course materials (i.e., textbook materials or lectures). Students must state the affiliations of the author(s), their research question, research method, analytic technique, defined key concept(s), findings, a quote for argument or findings, findings, and utility for the student’s research question. Writing is expected to be explicit and succinct. Annotations of sources from other disciplines are not acceptable and will receive a grade of 0.
