In a short essay of approximately 600 words, reflect on your relationship with writing and the writing process. As this is a reflection, you are welcome to use the first person (I, me), but you are expected to follow the other conventions of formal writing (complete sentences, transitions between paragraphs, no contractions). Remember, this is still being graded by your professor so you should maintain a formal tone. As well, you are expected to consult two sources outlining the writing process OR writing tips and tricks. These can be popular news articles, publications by a Writing Centre or on a university blog, or scholarly papers. Relate these pieces to your current approach to writing, or to the ways that you may work and continue to improve on your writing practices. You are welcome to be critical of these approaches and outline why they may not work for you or for others in certain situations or to outline how they may be helpful. This is meant to be both a reflective and reflexive exercise, where you engage in some meta-cognition (thinking about where your thoughts and feelings are rooted). Your reflection should answer the following questions: 1) How would you describe your relationship with writing and the writing process? 2) What elements of your identity have contributed to this relationship? (these can be positive influences or challenges you have dealt with or overcome) 3) How will you foster or maintain good writing practices as you move through your university career?

Your Reflection Assignment… • Asks you to consider your relationships with writing • Invites you to think through how your social location impacts your writing + You can relate this to writing in your major or field, or in general. • Is designed for you to practice reflexivity in relation to writing, NOT to summarize who you are. + Understanding your position as a writer will help you work on your own writing challenges and weaknesses as you move ahead as students. It can also help you understand how you relate to different concepts you will encounter as nurses.Reflection 101: A Broad Overview • How does who you are shape your responses to the discussion prompts? Note: Students have a tendency to focus on negative elements of their lives here, but the ways in which we are privileged is also important. + Example: “I grew up in an upper-middle-class family, so I had little concern about how my education would be paid for. As a result, I was able to participate in many extracurricular activities.” + Example 2: “Although I grew up in an affluent neighborhood, my household was the only singleparent household on the block. As a result, I had to take care of my younger siblings quite often and could not participate in many extracurricular activities” + Example 3: “My family is very involved in our faith community [note that you can say this without specifying which faith, if you want]. As a result, I did not have a time to have a part time job in high school and I sometimes worry about how this will impact my employment prospects in the future” • What parts of your experience most impact your views on certain issues (education, a current event)?
