The Religious Object, Painting or Building
Project Summary
Create an essay, presentation or video that analyzes a religious or spiritual painting, sculpture, or building that you go see in person, and compare it to a similar object, painting or building from a different religion. For example, if you go to a church and see a religious sculpture you would compare that to a sculpture from a different religion. Note – Catholicism and Christianity are both Christian, so don’t compare objects/building from those two belief systems.
This chapter and the accompanying videos explore religious objects, paintings, sculptures and buildings. We have also seen structures and building that serve/served a spiritual or religious purpose in past chapters, such as the Pantheon, Great Mosque at Djenne, Chartes Cathedral and the Dome of the Rock. In this assignment you will explore and analyze a religious building, sculpture, or painting in person. Seeing artwork in person is a vastly different experience than seeing it on a phone or computer screen. You may select something in a museum or in or around a local religious building in your local community, but you must personally be in its presence.
