INSTRUCTIONS: Hello, I just got my grade back from this assignment and the instructions were not followed correctly at all. A book was not chosen and an issue from the book was not discussed. The instructions were to choose an ethical issue from the BOOK ( Newjack OR Locked In) and write about it. Choose ONE ethical/policy issue. Once you choose that you are supposed to summarize the issue in detail providing multiple examples from the BOOK. Then you are to apply what was learned from attached PowerPoints to the issue you are summarizing. I received a 20% grade out of 100%. I will also show you what the professor marked on my paper as a reference. PowerPoints are attached to original submission and so are the instructions but I will write them out again for you.
This part of the paper should include:
* A summarized example of the ethical or policy issue you have chosen to explore from your book (you will need to cite the Pfaff or Conover book here.)
* The ethical system or systems being used to judge this issue hint: you will need to cite the Pollock book for this.) The source of misconduct
* Bad person? (Hint: this will be very hard to prove within the scope of this paper, so don’t go this route)
* Unclear or poorly constructed policy?
* Misapplication of discretion?
* Lack of structured decisionmaking process
* Low visibility environment?
* Lack of supervisory oversight?
* Code of silence culture? (Blue wall of silence)
* A criminological theory or a theory of unethical behavior that may be behind why this person or institution behaved the way that they/it did. Define the theory, name who came up with theory (if many people developed it, just name one or two). You can use theories from your criminological theory course or from what we learned on theories of unethical behavior in class. You will need to provide a citation for the theory. Note: if you choose the Locked In book, then it will be hard to apply a criminological theory to your issue. If you can’t figure out how to apply a criminological theory or theory of unethical behavior, you can instead write about the factors that led to the circumstances surrounding your policy issue; in other words, how did this problem arise? Ask me for help if you’re reading Locked In and are confused by this.
At minimum for Paper Assignment 1: A good goal to aim for with Paper Assignment 1 is about 3-4 pages, double spaced,
Times New Roman size 12 font.
Book Choices
* Newjack
– A good read about the life of a correctional officer written by an award-winning journalist who coulc only get access to the prison by becoming a CO. This is a book full of individual-level ethical dilemmas but also touches upon larger ethical issues endemic to the prison system in the U.S. You may focus on individual leve dilemmas he taced or broader prison broblems in the U.S. or both. Although this book will interest readers broadly, those interested in law enforcement careers in particular may benefit from this book
* Locked In
– This is also an award-winning book on criminal justice policy and mass incarceration in the U.S. and is maybe the most cutting-edge book right now on its subject. The book essentially asks: Why does the U.S. stand out as the country with the highest incarceration rate per capita? His thesis is that challenges the main explanation-what he calls the “Standard Storv” _and offers an explanation that focuses on other factors that have driven the U.S. prison population. This is more scholarly of a book than Newiack and is tilled with empirica data. but it is also worth the read it vou want to be ramillar with the most current and groundbreaking research in this field. This too will interest readers broadlv. but even more so to those students who may be interested in law/graduate school, policy/government jobs, or social justice tvres of work
How to approach vour research paper
1. Pick a book based on your interests. Locked In is policy relevant and is about prosecutors, courts, and sentencing practices though there is some in police in there and how they relate to the issue of mass incarceration in the U.S. Newlack is all about corrections and law entorcement and is more filled with ethical issues faced by the Ted Conover, the CO and author, and less about policy analysis. They are very different kinds of books. but both have much relevance to concepts discussed in this course
2. Once you’ve read a good portion of the book (at least half of it), start looking at the scholarly research on your chosen ethical issue. Hint: you will probably find a lot of general information about your ethical issue in scholarly journal articles that talk about how to FIX vour ethical issue. This will effectivelv kill two
birds with one stone: vou get information on your ethical issue AND also one perspective on how to correct it
3. Re-read paper instructions. construct an outline or dratt ot vour paper that contains the main policy/ethical issues you want to focus on. Importantly, you want to start thinking about why a certain course of action should be taken among the alternatives and why. In other words, don’t just say that something is right or wrong, but explain why one is a better choice among the alternatives given the ethical svstems we learned in class and/or from a policv perspective.
4. Starting writing your paper (research should have been conducted in step 2).
