Learning Objectives for this assignment:
Experience the aesthetics of viewing works of art in person at a gallery.
Engage with a Visual Artist as they discuss their work in a live lecture presentation.
Utilize and Apply relevant Art vocabulary in response to the lecture and exhibition in a written essay.
Task 1: Attend the Michael Ziegler Artist lecture in the Parr Center Theater and gallery exhibition in Dove gallery (across from the theater)
These assignment instructions are also included as an attachment. I recommend printing these instructions and taking them with you to the presentation along with a pen and notebook as they include the question prompts.
There will be a sign-in book at the lecture. Please print your name along with “Art 111+ your section number” & Instructor’s name.
Please note: If you cannot attend due to a class schedule conflict, please email your instructor with a copy of your schedule.
Task 2: Write a three paragraph essay based on the prompts below about Michael Ziegler’s work. *Please do not title the paragraphs or highlight, bold type or underline any text in your essay. (200-300 words). Please write in complete sentences and spellcheck your document before submitting.
Task 3: Submit your Word or Pdf document paper via the submission link (below the Assignment Instructions in the Content Module).
Essay Format:
Paragraph 1 should be about the information and your personal responses to Artist Michael Ziegler’s Lecture. Use the following question prompts for the first paragraph:
Who is the artist? Why do you think this artist creates this kind of work?
What is the work about overall? How does it connect with the culture in which it was created?
What kinds of images inspire the artist or are included in this artist’s work?
If you could ask the artist a question, what would you ask them? Although you are not required to verbally ask this question at the lecture, you may do so if you prefer. At the end of the lecture, there is usually some time reserved for the audience to ask questions depending on the time allotted.
How can you connect this artwork to your own life?
Paragraph 2 should be about your responses to visiting the gallery to view the Artist’s work in person after the lecture. Use the following question prompts for the second paragraph:
What was your first reaction to the artwork when entering the gallery? Why do you think you had this reaction?
What is your opinion about the artwork? What emotions do you feel when looking at the work?
What adjectives and/or verbs would you use to describe the artwork?
How did the artist use the elements of color, shape, and space to contribute to the mood or meaning of the artwork?
What do you think the artist is trying to say in this work? What is the meaning or message? *Since the meaning or message may vary among different works in the gallery, you may choose one to discuss or explicate a common theme between multiple pieces.
Paragraph 3 should be about the materials and techniques the artist used to create this body of work. Use the following question prompts for the third paragraph:
What materials are used in the creation of this artist’s work?
What kinds of tools does the artist use to create this work?
What techniques or processes are used to create this work?
How do the materials used relate to the idea or meaning of the work?
What is the story behind this artwork?
