Education inequality is still a problem in the United States, it caused by events in the past and the laws that create the current problem of the education system. Even after some major court decisions like Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 mentioned discrimination is illegal, educational inequality still around and has a major effect on people of color. In this essay, I will talk about the historical background of educational inequality, examine its present-day effects, and analyze the problem using Conflict Theory.
There is still a problem with educational inequality, where students’ chances and education is influenced by family background. The No Child Left Behind Act, passed in 2001, and its successor, Every Student Succeeds Act, which became law in 2015, were meant to correct educational inequalities. But, they received criticism for applying a one-size- to education. People believe that these actions make inequality more difficult by promoting a standardized approach that doesn’t consider the unique needs of different students.
School choice has become a way of solving issue of unequal access to education. There are different options available for education besides the normal public schools. Including career schools, private schools, and homeschooling. Although, the unequal access to those options is a cause for concern as it can lead to inequality instead of fixing it.
Conflict Theory, which is based on the ideas of Karl Marx, focuses on the unequal distribution of wealth and the impact of power in shaping how societies are develop. In the area of education, Conflict Theory suggests that educational institutions play a role in maintaining and defending the social inequalities that already exist. The education system reflects the larger gaps in society, when resources, opportunities, and power are not evenly distributed. The wealthy and high status individuals, who are part of privileged communities and attend private schools, keeping their advantages by making sure their children receive a high-quality education. While some certain groups who are often from lower social backgrounds face difficulties that lead to their disadvantaged status in society.
When I talk about school choice, it’s often used as a solution to improve education. However, if we look at it from a Conflict Theory view, we can see that it can allow those who already have power to gain even more power. Wealthy families have an advantage in managing the education system to get better opportunities, while disadvantaged communities face difficulties. Selling education, like through independent schools and private institutions, may make current problem worse by taking funding away from public schools.
In conclusion, educational inequality in the United States is still influenced by historical factors and has a significant impact on the current state of education. Making sure that everyone has access to a quality education is still a major problem. It’s important to make changes to the education system that are open to all people, so that everyone has an equal chance to succeed. Reaching true educational equity requires us to carefully analyze policies, how resources are shared, and how power is distributed in the education system.
