The United States continues to use the death penalty even though many Western democracies and a growing number of states have banned executions. Public support for the death penalty among Americans is waning. The finality of death leaves no room for error. Convictions must be based on reliable physical evidence that leaves no doubt who should be held accountable for the death of an innocent person. In many criminal cases, eyewitness testimony and confessions are no longer viewed as reliable. Whether you are a death penalty proponent or opponent, we can all agree no innocent person should be put to death as a result of a wrongful conviction.
