The community service project provides an opportunity for students to collaborate with a community organization to address real community needs and issues. The goals of the community service project are as follows:
· For the students to apply key course concepts and theory to address real-world concerns
· To deepen the students’ appreciation of civic duties and responsibilities
· To foster the students’ understanding of the values that support the mission of Catawba College
Through completing the project and critical reflection, each student will be able to make connections among the course work, the community, and the mission of Catawba College. The project may not involve an exchange of money. That is, the students must participate in an activity or event. Students may complete it individually, in groups, or as a whole class. The instructor may participate as well. The project might involve organizing a food drive, feeding the hungry, helping at a nursing home, or cleaning a park. Students must participate in the community service project for at least 2 clock hours.
After completing the community service, each student will write a reflection paper that will give him/her an opportunity to revisit or look back upon his/her service activity. Students will need to include each of the guidelines below to complete this paper.
1. Begin your paper with what community service means to you and the importance of community service (possible reference point).
2. Describe the community service you performed, and the community need you helped meet with your service, especially about the mission of Catawba College (make sure you detail where and when the service took place).
3. State 2 facts (minimum) about the organization you did your service for (possible reference point).
4. Explain how you think what you learned will help you in your future.
5. Describe the result of your service and how you felt when your service was complete.
6. How did your community service work influence your opinion related to community service?
All components of this paper need to be in an APA format, no less than 2 pages in length, not counting the cover page or the reference page. You can only receive credit for this assignment if you complete both – community service AND reflection paper.
