Criminal Justice Reform Final Paper
Throughout this semester, we will engage with readings that are critical of many elements of the US criminal justice system. Your final assignment for this course will be to develop your own proposal for reform (or, if you think the system is perfect, you may defend it) by using class material and outside sources.
The paper should include:
1) A descriiption of current US policy and its effects
2) at least one anecdote (whether from your life, people you know, class readings or documentaries, or outside sources) based on people’s experience of this element of criminal justice.
3) at least two opposing perspectives on reform
4) the strategy you support, and why it would be effective

Sentencing Guidelines (primary)
Court System as a whole (Secondary)
Nuts and Bolts
1. Your paper should include a descriiption of:
a. Current US policy and its effects
b. At least one anecdote illustrating how people experience the element of the criminal justice you are describing (can be from your life, class readings, or outside sources)
c. At least two opposing perspectives on reform
d. The strategy you support and why it would be effective
2. 8-10 pages (2400 to 3000 words, not including bibliography).
3. You must cite AT LEAST three materials from the course. (attached in files)
4. You must cite AT LEAST five materials from outside the course. Of these, AT LEAST three must be scholarly sources—including books and peer-reviewed journals, but not newspaper articles or websites.
5. Citations: Make sure you use an accepted citation system (when in doubt, use APA, but others like MLA are ok). I strongly recommend using a free citation manager like Zotero—I will show you how to do so in class.
a. In text citations must include author name and page number (for APA, see https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/in_text_citations_the_basics.html)
b. At the end, include a reference list (for APA, see https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/reference_list_basic_rules.html)
7. all work must be original and cannot be copied or paraphrased from a generative AI program (e.g., ChatGPT, Bard, Bing AI, Quillbot).
