Payne, D. (2012). Culture change matters more than technological change, US healthcare expert tells integrated care summit. BMJ : British Medical Journal, 344(may03 1), e3178–e3178.
Rafferty, P. (2017). Development and testing of the “Culture of Care Barometer” (CoCB) in healthcare organisations: a mixed methods study. BMJ Open, 7(8), e016677–e016677.
You will be considering the role that culture plays in a healthcare organization. We learn about Kenneth Kizer took over as head of the Department for Veterans Affairs in 1994, the staff was demoralized by the federal bureaucracy’s risk averse and punitive culture. Patients faced long waiting times, and the service was highly hospital-centric. He acknowledges the important role technology plays but also the importance of culture and team development. He is well known for stating, “The technology enables a different way of care to be done. It supports a new culture. It supports some new processes. But it’s just a dumb computer.” You will also consider the culture of caring for patients in the next article.
