The essay for fiction is a research essay. You will be combining a literature survey and a response argument.
The secondary sources you will use are the two articles in A Good Man Research Guide.
A literature review summarizes the arguments of critical articles. You will do this for both of the articles you have read.
Each summary must explain what the claim the article makes about the interpretation of the story. Each summary must explain HOW the author constructed the argument, including their reasons and their reasoning. Each summary must be a minimum of 350 words.
The final section of your research essay will be your response to the two articles. Do you agree with one or the other of the articles? Make an argument explaining why you agree or disagree with the two articles; why you agree in part; why you disagree with both, etc. Make sure this section clearly states and supports your conclusion (argument, claim, main idea, etc) about how to interpret this story. This section should be a minimum of 800 words.
identify the topic sentence of each paragraph; Review the topic sentences you identified: are they the conclusions? what are the premises? Underline conclusions, place premises in brackets.
paraphrase the topic sentence of each paragraph
summarize each paragraph by outlining the argument of the paragraph in a meaningful, premise-and-conslusion form (I’ll show you how to do this in class).
identify the thesis (main argument) of the entire article and paraphrase it
summarize the article
Print out the article and feel free to write your paraphrases and summaries on it. Bring to class on the due date.
