The goal of this lab assignment is to help build your writing and research skills. You will write an academic research essay on your end of semester presentation topic. Whatever you’ve selected and have given to me is what I expect. If you’d like to change it, please let me know. To those who haven’t selected one yet, go ahead and pick one now.
You’ll have to perform some research, record and document where you found the information and cite it appropriately
In a research essay, you’ll want to address the following;
What you knew about your topic before you did the research
Why were you interested in your topic
Questions about the topic you had
Facts or information you found for your topic
What you learned
How has it changed your view on the topic
Why is this topic important to you
What is required in this essay
At minimum 1,500 words (3 pages)
Needs to be written by you, not plagiarized. I will use a DCCCD provided program to find plagiarism
Either submit the paper electronically through eCampus OR
Below is just a format template you may use as a go by. You can write this report however you want, but this will help you achieve the minimum. I just want you to be able to use publicly available information you may not have known before.
TITLE – Choose a title that describes your topic. Whatever you choose, ensure it is self-explanatory.
INTRODUCTION – Define or describe what your topic is, how is it important, and why did you select it.
MATERIALS AND METHODS – Research methods, what databases did you use? Where did you find your information? Cite these sources, and provide a way for the reader to recreate the data you have obtained. If you used Wikipedia, you cite Wikipedia as a source where you located your information. How did you obtain the data? Give credit where credit is due.
RESULTS – What facts or information did you found about your topic? Discuss the all the details you’ve learned here
DISCUSSION – Explain what your research and information mean to you. Also explain what it means to anyone else.
APPENDICES – Any maps, tables, graphs, pictures, any data should be located in a separate appendix in a numerical order (Appendix I, II, III, etc) Whatever you reference first in your paper, the Appendix should match. Example you first explain aerial photography, you should refer to Appendix I for aerial photographs available for review.
There is no right or wrong on how you write your paper. I just want to challenge you to learn more about your topic and write it out.
Grading Rubric
Organization – is the formal paper organized logically and lays out a path for the reader to traverse
Adequate Research conducted – if you googled a few websites and copied and pasted the information, you won’t get a good grade. Put some effort into this!
Is your report have the necessary titles, appendices/attachments, references?
Do you have a works cited?
Is your report formatted to look professionally?
Use complete sentences.
