Your mission for today: write another paragraph that follows logically from your last. Upload your new paragraph along with your working thesis and the paragraph you wrote for rough draft one by midnight (11:59pm, Monday, 10/23/23). Remember to upload a document that contains these three things: your working thesis statement, your paragraph from rough draft one, and your new paragraph written today.
Your new paragraph should be a logical extension of your last paragraph, or it should be another unit of thinking that develops your current working thesis statement. It’s fine if you still aren’t sold on your thesis – writing is thinking, and you will see that your ideas develop as you draft! And it’s fine if you’re not sure how the new paragraph connects to the last one you wrote. Just keeping thinking about your part of the education conversation, and about how the texts connect to one another.
If you’re still confused, review the class presentation in our Week 8 module called “Paragraphing” (and remember, you’ve been writing paragraphs your whole life!). Remember that a paragraph is a unit of meaning and that it should develop one idea (a smaller logical piece of that working thesis statement). Pro tip: when confused about where to start, choose two quotations, each from different authors, and start working on how they are connected to each other. Then go back and draft a topic sentence that announces the work you’ve done around those quotations.
Your paragraph should contain:
A strong opening move that tells the reader the paragraph’s purpose
A purpose that is focused, is evidence based, and has something to do with your provisional working thesis
Evidence from the texts in the form of quotations
Properly cited quotations. Remember, this is what an in text looks like: (Davidson 12).
Analytical sentences that follow each quotation and that explain HOW the quoted text works towards your paragraph’s purpose
Closing sentences that make my work “add up” to my stated purpose and connect back to the provisional thesis statement
